Here's a new one... (cam carnage)
Anyone ever see the little ear on the cam where the gear attaches bust off like this? The threads on the bolts that hold the gear to the cam were worn smooth, and it let loose on the freeway. Only damage I can see besides the cam is where the teeth on the cam dug into the metal plate behind it toward the rear of the motor, amazingly the chain was still on top of the gear, so I don't think it jumped time.
Anyways, I doubt this is a common occurrence, just thought I'd see.

Edited.
What do you mean you're still "in-time"? Did the whole gear break free from the cam? Or is it just the one side (the one ear) that broke? If they both broke, that cam wouldn't spin - in which case nothing is in time and whichever cylinder still had the valves open must be completely destroyed, combustion chamber, valves, and piston.
If just one of the ears broke, and the cam was able to still spin, it's maybe okay. If the bottom bolt (referencing picture) is still holding the gear in place, then how warped/bent is the cam gear?
Still though, that's hardened steel. I can't believe that'd break like that - even if the bolts were stripped.

My guess is the bolt may have been over-torqued and/or finding a weak spot on that ear. If you don't see damage on the crank gear down below you may have lucked out and the broken ear found it's way to the crank case. If it didn't make a bunch of shrapnel on the way there it's an easy fix. Cam, cam chain, cam gear if it's damaged.
Do a compression check to see if you have bent valves, if good, press on.
