I believe they are better known as 'coil on plug' .
Basically the plug sits directly on the plug. Ford has used them for years.

I'm a bit embaressed about this, but if you look at your plug connectors n dispense with the HT lead n substitute the LT leads that attach to the coil you have stick coils. No HT leads the coil is directly attached to the spark plug, super efficient ignition that can be adapted to older style systems

They have absolutly nothing to do with coiling your fingers round your stick.OK?

Disappointing.

But I'm sure worthy of further discussion; I think my boss's Honda car has that sort of arrangement.

But what is the upside of these fabled "stick coils"?

Further down out of the airflow, closer to the heat source of the head, can't see any benefits so far. But I know diddly-squat about the Dark Side (electricity) so I'm obviously missing something?

Default Benefits of stick coils

From what I have read and know from my using on my GPZ900R with the conversion the benefits are:
1. Better cold starting
2. Better response
3. Stronger spark ( There seems to be some discussion on this )
4. More reliable
Basically less to go wrong due no HT leads, plug caps or coils, stick coils all in one so less travel for electric current to flow. Fitted to my GPZ which I was having no problem with but definitely seemed to run smoother and accelerate cleaner. Main thing is to wire up correctly. Have CBR1000RR COILS fitted to my CBR and runs great first mod I did as old coils and leads looked well past sell by date and definitely started better.
