Shadow,
You're probably right but my electrics also seem a bit flaky, with flickering neutral lamp, dim headlamps at idle etc, so a new reg-rec won't hurt...

You would do well to check all your earth wires - flickering lights etc is a symptom.
Dim headlight at idle is normal - the reg rec only starts to charge at 3000RPM.
Look at Electrex for a replacement r/rec if you go that route - they charge from 1400RPM and are a far better unit than the original.Better cooling too.

^ I have to agree. The original R/R output is lacking. The stick coil mod if you haven't done it yet with the new R/R will give you a nice hot spark.

Thanks WH, have ordered RR, will fit it at the weekend. Battery is pretty new, Varta I think. Will see if there's any improvement.

I also managed to squirt a WD40-type straw into the airbox through the breather hole at the top, thankfully my son's hand was small enough to fish it out!

We've had threads on the uses of WD-40 but never the straws that come with it. Hide and seek is a good one there. How about Pick-up-stix???

You say the battery is newish but letting a battery sit under 80% charge will trash it. Lead-acid batteries need to be tended. Also, a battery not fully charged can be harmed by freezing temps.

Default Slightly better

I have now fitted a Motobatt and a new reg/rec. She now starts immediately when cold and the choke works as it should.
However I still get the same tired, slow starter motor noise when starting from hot.
Guess I should now check the wiring.
Does the relay work better when cold?

Of all the mods to do this one is a no-brainer AND it's pretty cheap too if you do your homework. Not sure where you are but I just did a quick fleabay search and found this on page one:

04 05 Honda Fireblade CBR 1000RR Set of Coil Sticks Electrical Coils | eBay

$30 US for coils AND wires = everything you need to do this mod (plus a little of your time). So worth it.
