Default Good times...hunting oil leaks

Right now I'm trying to narrow down why the bottom of my engine looks like someone took a spray bottle of oil and spritzed it everywhere. Front of the engine is bone dry. Back of the engine, under the stator cover around the water pump...soaked. Oil pan on the back...soaked.

I've got the water pump off and have cleaned that up good (caked in wet gunk), got a oil pan gasket on order, and still need to order the exhaust gaskets so I can drop the pan. Anything else I should look for while I'm there?

What are you using for chain lube? That's my first question. A light lube or oil will fling off on the front sprocket and wet the entire left under side of the bike and will weep across the lower case. Is your side stand crapped up also?

If you can easily wipe the lube from the chain, it is to light.

If it is leaking, usually there is a drop of oil hanging from the low point.

Maybe you don't actually have a leak. If it is not dripping, it may not be a leak.

At the moment, I'm using chain saw bar oil in my Scott-Oiler. That's what it most likely is, but I was noticing a slight green tinge to some of the droplets that were still hanging off the water pump.

Also, the bike has been on the lift for a couple of days (not running) and I was getting an oil puddle from under the water pump

Malbo, hopefully just two separate and coincidental issues man.

I would get some GUNK and hose it down and wait to see what happens. Maybe the oiler is weeping. I find it hard to believe that you would get an oil leak out of the blue. I'm not saying that it's impossible, just that, other than a valve cover gasket leaking, I can't see much else leaking, especially down below.

^^^^^^^^ How about the oil seal for the output shaft, could that be a possibility?
