Fuel pump relay 1987 F
Who out there knows how the fuel pump is set up on an 87 Hurricane. My one doesn't "click" when the key is turned on, only starts pumping when you hit the starter button. But once the engine is running it happily pumps away. This does mean though that if the bike has been sitting for any length of time it takes ages to get fuel through to the carbs. This only came to light when I ran out of fuel (whoops), also now need to check the fuel tap as it appears to be draining fuel through the reserve pick up even when set to "run" - maybe an internal leak ?.
Tested power supply to relay coil and was only getting 3.5v with engine running. If we bridge out the contacts the pump starts as soon as the key is turned on. Dicky relay?, and why only 3.5 v to relay?
Thanks

Thanks Steve, while I've gone to a "garage run" gravity feed, like JK I'm not 100% confident it will work in real life (it's a bit cold down here just at the mo' and the rego is on hold till September). Maybe the fuel line just needs to be rerouted to give a better flow? Someone else can surely give us some pointers?

Which way? please go down to the garage and take me a nice piccy, I think I may need to drop the line down below a frame member that the original factory line passes over. I will get a pic of my set up and post it later (after Coronation Street)

mine luckily was just the hose lines need to be more full with petrol rather than air, as i emptied my tank also.. yours sound like a relay for sure..the relay number you need is a CF322. The way mine works is you turn key, you hear two or three clicks of FP then its ready. when engine running if you put your hand lightly on the fuel hose you will feel a click every few seconds.
i posted a couple of pics of my twisted hose config to reach two points with different connector sizes..one to fp and other to petcock.

Hey:
I just removed the pump altogether and went gravity feed. It works just fine my 1988 has a big ported head, big cams, big bore kit, and 39 FCRs and works just fine. It miles@ 181 MPH geared for it 18/40 and 10.23 in the 1/4@135 MPH on 16/44 should have new times this year and hopefully a little better than these. The 39 FCRs are fuel hungry and would show any weakness at speed as that was the originally problem Honda thought they had was top end fuel starvation and why the pump was fitted, it turned out to be a fuel routing problem and Carb main jetting issue and was why the pumps were removed on later models, plus the pumps had relay and pump failures that seemed to be inconsistent. The pumps were removed with the later style fuel tanks and the reroute of the fuel lines was done. The 89-92 style carbs have no issues nor do the earlier ones you have or later style flatside type running gravity feed. This was an engineering design compensation for a problem that was fixed with technical rethink of what was happening and what was flawed. This Fuel pump was a convience for the rider not to have to remember to shut off the fuel tap when parked on the sidestand, as Honda had problems with the CBX model, causing rod damage with fuel hydrolock and did not want that with the new flagship CBR.
