Default Fuel gripe! :icon_rant:

My local Caltex servo is taking out the regular 91 fuel that I've run my bike (and everything else) on for four years without missing a beat. It's because of some bull5hit about the federal government demanding a certain percentage of fuel sold contains ethanol. They have that e10 crap already but, even the fuel company admits you get less power and worse economy than regular 91. They are going to put in Vortex 95 to replace it and..guess what..it'll cost more!

I understand our bikes don't like the 98 fuel but will the 95 be ok? Also I run a generator, pump, ride on mower as well as a few two stroke engines (boat motor, chainsaw, brush cutter) for which the e10 is not suitable.

Out here there is only one other decent sized servo and they once had a big line of cars down the road that had packed it in straight after fueling up 'cos of dodgy petrol. What do you guys think? I want to use one fuel for everything as I often syphon some out of the ute for the mower if I've forgotten to fill up a jerry. I imagine the 95 would do the job but being bled the extra cash hurts! Do you guys have these sort of problems where you are?

Thanks Hawk. It looks like the 95 will do fine for my various uses.

I think maybe the servo or the fuel company is taking the p!ss though. According to the notice on the pump the reason for taking out the 91 regular is that it contains no ethanol. They're replacing it with 95 which also contains no ethanol. Lots of people like me will not use the e10 stuff in our bikes, so we'll be forced to buy more expensive fuel for no gains. Even if there was a small increase in power (which it sounds like there isn't), I don't need any more from the cbr. What a rort! They say they've taken the 91 out of "selected sights". I think those sights have been selected based on a lack of alternatives in the areas concerned.

So your e10 is just 10% ethanol gas?
We have that chit everywhere over here. I just run straight 87 octane.... 10% ethanol or not. Runs fine. No worries. I'd run whatever you can find.

We've been running 90 Caltex here for years Dave. There are two options, "leaded" and "unleaded" - price is the same. I've run the bike on both, and don't have any problems. The earlier 95 octane didn't seem to give me any more power, either.

I tried 91 & 95. I even tried 98 a couple of times. Forget 98. Our old girls just don't like it. 95 works quite ok. Maybe a little more power but could be mind over matter & a little better mileage but nothing to write home about.
According to one of our current affairs programs on TV, E10 will definitely give less power & mileage(10%) so if the price isn't 10% cheaper than what 91 would be then go 95. Of course E20 (20%) etc.
