Default Fuel gauge removal!

I just picked up a 87 1000f and I runs really well, crappy plastics (been dropped a couple times), but I went out and rode it for over 100 miles and now there is a puddle of gas under it this morning, so I pulled up the gas tankand its leaking under the gauge apparatus. Was wondering if any body has every replaced or sealed one of these with any recc's? There looks like a bunch of sealant all over it so I don't know if thats stock or the previous owner did it!

i used JB Weld on a hole near the petcock valve, cleaned rust of and left 12 hours it did the trick, do not know about rubber seal on fuel gauge though.

So I pulled off the fuel sender after finding 3 of the 4 bolt broken off and the substance coating the sender plate being JB weld. Definetly not factory! I took the sender out and cleaned the tank side and the sender side up, cut thebolt flanges and drilled out the bolts removing the factory bolts and JB welded new bolts in place and the flanges back down, replaced the o-ring and tightened the flange back down and turned out as good as new! It was not a fun project without power tools but it worked so yeah!

Good work. Don't you feel better now, knowing that you're not leaking fuel all over the place?
Sounds like you did a better job than the last guy...
