front sprocket
 

hi all theres a noise coming from front sprocket,theres a couple of tight links in chain so pretty sure needs new chain & sprockets,question how do i get at front sprocket,is the cover where it is alloy with 3 or 4 8mm screws and what looks like a clutch cylender on it .?bleed nipple etc.do i have to take gear leaver off etc.would be gratefull for proceedure.bike is an 89 cbr1000f. i dont want to take any parts off i dont need to.thanks in advance. :icon_doh: it looks a bit more awkword to get to compared with my cbr600f just a plastic cover to take off and its there.

Yes, that's the cover. Take note of where the gear lever is so that you can put it back in the same position (10mm needed). That's about all you need to pull apart other than backing off the axle nut and chain adjusters to slide the tire forward for working room.

The front sprocket may have a chain guide held in place by two bolts. After market sprockets usually don't have the bolt holes for the guide. You don't need the guide so don't panic if you new sprocket is missing the bolt holes.

1. take off left lower fairing.
2. disconnect neuatral safety switch connector (green)
3. remove sidestand/gear shift assy.
4. Undo speedo cable
5. Remove sprocket cover (do not remove slave cylinder)
6. Remove chain guide
7. Remove sprocket bolt.
Assembly is the opposite: FSM calls out for torque settings for sprocket bolt & gear shift bolt.

Can someone clarify for him that he will or will not need to remove the side stand and gear shift lever on his year model. I have a 93 model, and even though the manual called for it to be removed, I did not have to.

I've done this job and there was no need to remove the side-stand or the neutral switch, mines a 1991.

There is an alignment mark on the gear shift pedal and shaft, though on mine it's very faint and I missed it the first time :icon_doh:

Yup done this once or twice :D ...... never takeoff the side stand either for the 1990 or
my 1993, like Hawk sez watch for the alignment dimples on the gear shaft and lever

ah...didnt see the year, senior moment. I quoted from the FSM for my 95. Just did a sprocket change, most likely could habe done it w/o r&rng the side stand.

at last today got stuck in and fitted new chain & sprocket kit ,got a did x ring kit for £79.00 .side stand and gear lever had to be removed right enough front sprocket was worn pretty badly think this was my main problem .would probably have got away with just changing it,anyway complete new kit fitted and bike dosent make any noise when slowing down now yipee ,will take her for a blast tomorrow .thanks again for all help. :icon_beerchug:

New chain and sprockets is always a good feeling.
