Front pads in rear caliper. Compatible?
Just bought a set of GoldFren padsfor the rear of a 91 FM model. I noticed that the model number on the packet is for the front pads (according to the Goldfren catalogue). I called the supplier and they said they will fit the rear. Should I bother even trying to fit the pads (i dont want to waste my time or freeze my fingers off ifI dont have to!!) or call back the supplier and tell them they are wrong????? From whatI could find online it seems that rear pads are thicker than front pads when new?????

RE: Front pads in rear caliper. Compatible?
I hadn't realised how easy it was to remove the pads or else i would never have posted this question. Anyway, theexisting pads in the rear are exactlythe same as the new ones received which are supposed to be front pads (Gold fren model 022) excluding thickness of course - the existing ones may have had thicker pad material when new. So buggered if i know, but they fit anyway.

I got caught out on this one...Following is from SBS who I use but principle is the same....[&o]
Pads for 1993 to 1999 are same for front and rear....so can interchange....like this...
[hr]
However... Pads for 1989 to 1992 are different front to rear - should not be interchanged - see thickness......
Front...
REAR

However... Pads for 1987 to 1988 are different front to rear -can not be interchanged - see thickness & SHAPE

Hi Poonie - You got sold the wrong item.. whilst the pad will initially fit it is the wrong thickness.
You say you got this (Goldfren model 022) which is for the front... http://www.goldfren.cz/online_catalog/en_index.htm
Youshould have been suppliedthis (Goldfren model 014) which is for the rear ... http://www.goldfren.cz/online_catalog/en_index.htm

RE: Front pads in rear caliper. Compatible?
I found my rear pads were completely shot recently, and had a part worn front set, which I've fitted. No problem........
Surely, the thickness of the pad becomes irrelevant once it's been in there a while ? I don't use my rear brakes much, and they were so far down, any change was an improvement. I don't understand Honda thinking, most of the time (it must be an oriental thing)

Thanks for the detailed response Naga_Thai, I had came to a similar conclusion but it is good to be confirmed by someone in the know. I am effectively paying for worn pads with a reduced life over standard rear pads. I will be raising this with the supplier. They advertise these pads as being specific for the 89-92 serieswhich is obviously misleading.
Cheers.
Cheers.
