Fork Oil for 1KFH

RE: Fork Oil for 1KFH
Collector,
Thanks for your advise and insight. Inner tubes look in the good condition. As you say, I don't see any visable scratch, scar or rust. When I got this bike, 12000 orirginal miles on it, and the previous owner said the bike was sitting outside with the cover a few years (maybe several years..). The condition was pretty good except for the top cowling had been cracked. Of course even with the low mileage, all the rubber parts are 20 years old,so I need to keep my eyes and replace those soon or later. I found out that the right fork started weeping a couple weeks ago. Until then, forks were finely working without any leaking. I can hardly think the inner tubes have problem. I replaced both right and left seals, but actually, left side was not leaking before I replaced the seals. Don't you think these seals are defective? I actually, chose cheaper one on the on line catalogue. Do you think I should get expensive one (only 5 USD different..) or HONDA genuien one?

Hey:
Yas what type /brand of seal was it? I got 2 sets off ebay that was pretty poor as they leaked in 1 day and it was the
only time I bought that brand. I changed to KL type and they lasted like normal. I used the other set in my drag bike and they
leaked the first run on both sides. OEM Honda, Leakproof, or K&L aftermarket I have had good luck with, others have been
suspect as 3 of 4 leaked(I mostly change both sides together)also it very important to get them in evenly. Honda has a tool
for this for 41mm forks that you may be able to rent from the dealer.
Good luck

Dub,
Ah.. I think the after market "PartsUnlimited" cheap seal causes the leaking. I will try leak proof. Are you talking about the tool for push the seal into the outer tube? My friend who told me put seals in a freezer is a racing mechanic/racer. He does same way for every famous racer bilke. But, I remember that he also told me, "Stay away from cheap rubbers.." It seems I learned in hard way...Just like I wrote earlier, the seals that I used were to easy to set in (I could push into the outer tube with my finger nail).

Hey:
Yes, thats the tool a slide weight it pushes evenly on the seal to get a perfect fit in the outer alloy tube,
+ 1 on the freezer.
I don't know if Leakproof is all that leakproof, but they do last, about as well as the OEM Honda for me.
Going for OEM Honda online is probally the best deal, unless your buddy can hook you up with Dealer
discount or Cost.
Good Luck

Dub & Collector,
Thanks guys again. I usually use a piece of PVC pipe that fits to the outer diameter of the oil seal to tap the seal into the outer tube. I might order wrong one or the Dennis Kirk sent me a wrong one. I don't know, but it was toooooo easy to push in. I really appreciate you both recommended HONDA genuien parts, but I red this right after I ordered "Leak Proof".

Motor_Fan,
Uhmm... that is very good question. When I did oil seal job for my another bike ('78 CB750F), simply it was not easy to push the seals in to the outer tubes. I didn't really think about which side is up or down. Maybe you are right. But package of the seals or service manual don't tell us about this, do they? Does someone have opinion?

RE: Fork Oil for 1KFH
On harleys (i am a mechanic working on them every day....) also the manual or package does not specify wich way is up. Never the less in MMI (Motorcicle Mechanics Institute--- Phoenix Arizona) they told us that fork seals, always have a one way mountig procedure if its not specified otherwise by the part info sheet. So as I was saying fork seals when mounted must have the serial pointing up, or lets say in a way that its viseable without dismounting (this procedure is corect for 99.9% of all type seals thar are out there). One more way of knowing how it is right is that the seal on the inside (the part that slides on the fork tubes) has atleast one bump. The sharp edge of the bump has to be pointing towards the inside where the product to be sealed (fork oil in our case) is present.
Hope it helped.

Motor_Fan,
Thank you for sharing your professional view and opinion. I have never thought about it. Yeah, the seals I bought, I saw two bumps inside, but old one (I assume these are HONDA genuine parts) has only one bump. So, as the coclution, do you think I put the seal up side down? (another set of seal are on the way anyway... oh well)
