Dumb possible newbie question
Hello,
Sorry to ask, but.....
I have been looking for a project bike for the winter and it turns out there is an 87 Hurricane for sale near me for $500... the only catch being - it has a broken timing chain.
I do not know the mileage, condition(the picture looks ok, but I can't tell alot from that), tires, etc.
The question is would I be looking at replacing an entire motor (cost?), or is a broken timing chain not neccessarliy fatal? How are parts availability for an 87?
And what kind of longevity canone usually expect from one of thesebikes?
I would like to go check this out, but don't want to spend mega bucks fixing up a 21 year old bike.
Would like some opinions!....
Thanks

RE: Dumb possible newbie question
Odie, It's hard to tell what all may have been damaged due to a failed timing chain. There could be damage to the crankshaft if the chain got bound up in the bottom end. The other thing that would make repairing this problem a real PITA is if you cannot get ahold of one of the broken chain ends and lift it back up to the cam shaft area. You'd need to do this to tie on your new chain and then rotate the crank to pull the new chain down around the crank gear. If you were unable to get a hold of the old chain end and rotate the crank, then the only way to replace the chain is pull the bottom end of the engine apart. That would be a bummer.

Tallnuf,
Thanks for the info. Any idea if the 87 was an interference engine? Just wondering if the valves, pistons, and rods would bebent when the timming chain broke.
Of course, if I could talk the guy down to about $300, and the engine was toast,I could probably part the bike out and recover the cost....especially if the plastic is in good shape.
I also looked at your toy list. I am currently riding an 06' DR650.
Thanks

RE: Dumb possible newbie question
On almost all bikes that I know of in the modern world, the valves are directly above the pistons. even if the motor is a loss, its no biggie to part it out and get a lot more than $500 from the parts.
if the internals are ok, you can put a new chain in, and expect to see something close at least to 100K miles from it if you take care of the bike.

If the chain is broke, I would deem the motor completely stuffed, even if it wasn't.
If you could find another bike with a good engine and buy both. Or tell the guy it’s not worth it and get the bike cheaper.
Also, what makes him say that the timing chain is broken?
One man’s broken is another man’s stretched.

At very high RPM's ...yer the possibility of valve damage , crankshaft chain drive gear damage , piston damage and even overhead chain gear damage is high..[:-]
but...
having said that , I have fixed engines that have thrown camchains with next to no damage at all ....
You really need to take a peek inside her to tell mate..
As already mentioned , if you are going to possibly part her off ...that sort of money is still well spent, as the spare part are worth alot of money for these older rides..
I think that if you only want to ride it, ( not part it )... you are better off spending an extra 500 and getting a good one mate ..
