Coolant and Temps
Noticed that my new to me 90 model has the fan switch mod that I can turn on anytime via the switch. Cruising around in 70 degree temps I noticed the temp starting to climb. Since it is only a gauge needle, I have no idea of actual temps, but don't like the idea of her getting hot on a 70 degree day. Anyone running engine ice in their scooter? Any improvement over the stock coolant?
Maybe a new thermostat and coolant is in her future? |
How high is it climbing? Mine will typically get up to 3/4 when I'm stuck in traffic but it's fine - fan kicks on and it doesn't over heat. I run Engine Ice too.

Never over heated, just climbs sitting still. I don't have a history with the old gal so I'm not sure what is normal.

my 1990 goes to 5/8 in traffic in hot weather and the fan kicks on never a problem
my 1993 went to 7/8 in traffic in hot weather and that pissed me off so I put the manual switch in - since it's my highway commuter most of the time anyhow I don't use the switch hardly ever but it's there should I have to my 87 is same as the 1990 - predictable - no issues Meh suppose I could have easily installed a new lower temp thermo switch in the rad of the 93 - must do that sometime :) |
From the sound of it, I think mine is ok then.

unless you ride a 20 mile daily commute at 3mph - I'd say yeah :D - the bike will
stay cool at anything over 15mph except for maybe 90 degree plus weather then a good 35mph + will be needed |
I was thinking about this same situation tonight after being stuck in heavy traffic, two up, and watching the temp gauge get very close to red. Moment I hit the highway it went down to 1/3 and stayed there. Fitting a lower temp switch is one option, but I was thinking along the lines of a higher efficiency fan. Has anyone fiddled with this idea. I'm sure modern fans draw less power and produce more air flow than these ones do.

and if you were to go with the more recent fans - true they are more efficient but for a hurricane I think you'd need a tandem setup - this I know from messing with Kawasaki Fans the by product of efficiency is less air being blown |
Yeah, these bikes are a bit unnerving the first few times you see the needle damn near in the red. You get used to it after like 7 years...... sort-of. :D
