Default Confused by Tyres

Hey all

I bought a 93 CBR1000f on the weekend. I am very happy with it, the only thing I need to do is put on some new tyres.

I understand that the rear tyre should be a 170/60 17, however the tyre on it at the moment is a 180/55 ZRXMO (73w) ( BT54)

Does this mean that the previous owner has fitted the wrong tyre, or is there some flexibility with tyre selection. I have booked it in with the local Honda dealer for new tyres tomorrow, but am a tad worried that it won't fit. They advised that they have a 170/60 17 Battlax for it.

Riding conditions are mostly touring/commuting in the tropics (wet for 5 months of the year).

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

170/60 is the normal size of rear tyre.

Many people change to a 180/55 rear because it gives a bigger choice of tyres and the 120/180 pairs are usually a better deal.

Only minor negative with the 180 is a very slightly slower turn in compared to the 170.

I would have to agree that 180/55's are much more common, and for some reason less expensive in some cases. When I was looking for new rubber in all the sets I looked at 180/55 was more prevelant. Ended up with some shinkos for 141.98 for the pair.

I don't know if this is true for all years but my '93 developed a head shake around 40 mph as soon as there was a little wear on the tires with the stock 170 rear. I've found that the 180 rear slows the steering just enough to pretty much eliminate the head shake.
The first time I put a 108/55 on was at the Mid-Ohio National race in 1999. I rode out from CT and bought a new rear tire from the Dunlop truck. I asked for the 170/60 but didn't look very hard at it until I was mounting the wheel back on the bike in the camping area. It was a lot tighter fit than I expected. I got it to fit and have never looked back.

I keep going back to Metzeler Roadtec Z6 due to the stick in the rain. I also use the 180/55. The tire is only 5mm wider on each side so there is really not much difference in handling as far as I can tell. There is getting to be more bikes out there with 120Front / 180Rear tires. It is getting to be a common pairing.

I had the same dilemma when I recently bought my bike. The tyres on it were 180's and they needed replacing. The tyres are meant to be 170 as per Honda. I noticed the 180's were scraping the chain-guard and created a groove in them. I know many choose to have the 180, but when I changed my tyres a few days ago I chose the 170, the spec honda designed for the bike.

I also recommend you go for Michelin Pilot Road and seeing your in the tropics my choice would be the latest Pilot Road 3 their latest tyres. However expect the 170's not to be as ready available as the 180's.

You can just bent the chain guard mounts outwards slightly

Yep I put on 180 Power Pures on my 90 and it grooved the chain guard meh who cares.

The 93 has a 170 Bridgestone on it and to be honest it does lean over a hair faster, but
come replacement time I hope to put 180 PR3's on both of them. That's one shyte hot
looking set of rubber Indiana Hurricane has just put on his !

I did run the Power Pures last year and ran a lot of highway miles. Wore the center out of the back tyre. This year I put on a set of PR3's. Hope they work out well. Suppose to be really good in rain.
