Aracanth, I just went from the 170 to the 180 myself. I have a '94 and have read in the forum the some member’s tires rub the guard. As I was mounting the rear wheel, I noticed the chain guard ears could be bent a little, as you have mentioned, if there was any rubbing. I don't feel much difference in the low speed handling but the bike feels much more stable when smoking the soles off of my footwear. I also noticed that the bigger tire still holds the road in the rain. A 180 is only 5mm bigger per side than a 170 so the ears would not have to be bend to far.

Absolutely, I havent noticed any difference, and I have used 180's for 2 years, but it was more the look of the chain guard that I preferred. I didnt like the plastic one, the space increase was just a nice bonus!
