Default CCT replaced- Question for those that have been there

OK. Installed new CCT and Slider.(didn't need the slider, but I had bought it in advance) It looks to me like I'm off a HALF Tooth on the cam timing. I know a half tooth can't be done so??? With the T mark aligned with the first mark on the ignition pulse rotor the EX cam mark is slightly above the head and and the IN is slightly below. The distance is about half a tooth. If I rotate the crank CCW to the second mark on the ignition pulse rotor, just a few degrees, the cam sprockets will come into alignment with their respective edges. I think it's a tooth off, but wondered if this is just due to CCT slop, (wishful thinking). If you have been here yourself, let me know what you think. Meanwhile I'm gathering strength to go into it again. Had a hellava time getting the chain/sprocket/cams back together while holding the new CCT in slack position with screwdriver per manual!

When I did mine, I had to take one of the cam chain sprockets off of the cam shaft. I couldn't get enough slack in the chain to get it off of the sprocket teeth. I just marked the sprocket with asharpie so I wouldn't put it back on incorectly. Was doing it alone and maybe I wasn't putting enough pressure against the tensioner. I also didn't realize that when you start to take loose the camshaft covers, the valve springs push up on the camshaft and put more tension on the chain.

Oh yea, one other thing to keep in mind. The cam shafts rotate half as many times as the crankshaft, so you could be off one tooth on the crankshaft sprocket which would look like a half tooth on the camshaft.

I had that on mine as well. I even marked the chain & sprockets and took them on & off in all possible positions and got the same result.

My bike runs beautifully so I am not concerned.

My only guess is that when the chain tensions it comes into alignment

Thanks for the feedback K-fers! I did turn the crank thru several rotations getting the same result. I went back in and did another attempt with about the same result. It looks better by about a 1/4 tooth this time, but still not spot on. The crank tends to rotate slightly CCW as I wrestle the chain/sprockets to cam soothers be aware of that.I did take pictures but found that the camera won't focus very well that close so no good for posting.Completed reassembly with a valve adustment. Test ride of 20 miles without a problem. No more PAIL OF NAILS for the first 10 miles. Hope this last for a good long while. The bike is a '94 with only 19700 miles. It sat in a shed for most of 6-7 years. I got it with 8000 miles on it and it had the typical CC noise at start up but it got louder and lasted longer as the miles added. Good to GO!
