saga continues
Hi Guys
today removed the carb again and rinsed everything in brake cleaner
flushed thru the idle bypass holes and pilot screws
re set inner 2 pilot screws from 2 turn( factory std) to 2 3/4 open
checked good free operation of throttle sliders ( nice vacuum hiss from all 4 when coming down from the diaphram)
reassembled
result
idle is now more stable , even when not fully warmed up
but the pick up from idle to 10pct throttle is still dicky
however if i leave the choke lever about 1/8th on then the pick up is immediate and strong
so that now precludes a failure of ignition and shows me its too lean at the bottom end
so the next question is how to get the mixture a little richer from about 5 pct throttle to about 10 pct throttle when it picks up nicely...
your thoughts are appreciated

I know I am jumping in late on this issue, but I had similar issues with my 96. When I purchased mine the tank was eaten up with rust and the in-tank filters (on petcock) were torn letting a LOT of debris through and into the entire fuel system and carbs.
I have had my carbs off at least 6 times to date (bought bike in Aug of 2010) the last being 3-4 months ago. The reason was due to symptoms very much like yours. Idle was ok, but part throttle performance was poor, surging and just not running correctly. Each time one or more "pilot" jets was blocked. The jets on these bikes r so small that almost any debris will block them.
After the last time, probably 2000 miles ago all has been well.
Just trying to help in any way I can, because I know how frustrating issues like this can be.
btw, I have synchronized my carbs only one time even after removing them many times but have never taken them apart, always removes as a unit.

many thanks tomitt and others
tomorrow I will fit the " new " carb bank and see the difference ( float chambers were squeaky clean)
once the old one is off ill try to see how i can really clean our the pilot holes
i already did the jet and can see thru it but i guess there is gunk elsewhere
what is the best way to get it out and fluch thru the little passageways
ultrasound ? or other method
pls advise ...
am thinking to put a paper gas filter in the way to screen out smaller particles
anyone done that?
