Whats is the widest tire i can put on the rear of 88 1000f ?????

 

Well, you can "fit" a 180. But I wouldn't. The problem is that most of the 180s are 45 or 50 aspect ratio tires. Meaning that their side wall is not as tall as the 170/60-17 that came on your bike. So, the rear will not sit up as high. This will limit your cornering clearance.

Also, unlike other bikes of the time, the CBR1000F does not have it's speedometer pickup on the front wheel. It is in the drive sprocket cover near the clutch slave cylinder. So, changing the size of the rear tire will also alter your speedometer.

Just some things to think about.

 

With the correct spacers, I believe you can fit the later 89-92 model rear rim, which will allow you to use a 180 tyre. On your present rim I wouldn't go wider than a 140 or 150.

 

For the 1987-1988 use 150 even if the stock is 140. Better handling and a few more tyres to choose from.
Change the rear rim for a 1989 Hurricane, or any other fitting rim, and you can use 180 without changing the swingarm.
I put a Kawa ZXR750 rim (with some small adaptions) with 180 tyre on my 1987 Hurricane and it works well and looks good.

@MR. Ape: I have to correct you here. First, most 180 rear tyre has the "55" ratio, which means it is 55% of the widht in height. This means it is ~99mm "high". A 170/60 is with the same math ~102 mm "high"(the height varies between tyre brands and models, it's just a guideline). This difference is neglitible (spelling?). This is also meaningless info, since a "88 can´t fit a 170, or a 180 for that matter, since it's rear rim is too narrow. As Shadow says, you must change the rim to a newer one, from -89 (US market -90) or newer, which is 5,5" wide.
Second: to my knowledge, the -88 speedo is not driven by the front sprocket, but by the front wheel. Later models was driven by the front sprocket.

Third: Can it really be that hard to put a real Topic to a thread you start, Myles? I mean, "cbr1000f"? Yeah, ofcourse, thats what we talk about here... On MineI have a 150 rear 110 front, u could put a 120 front and 160 rear but it will slow the steerin down a lot.

 

I just put a 150 on the back (up from the stock 140) and left a 110 on the front. I agree with Dragon that this setup has a very nice steering feel.

Sorry for the"hiding" Shadow, when I've tried to reply to something, it has'nt worked, it has kinda taken the "spirit" out of me.
