RE: cam chain
Should be zero freeplay. If I remember correctly, either the cam chain or the tensioner should be replaced around 75k miles

RE: cam chain
Mine started rattling 3 months after I fitted a new one, and it's still rattling on startup, goes away after a mile or two when the bike's warm. There's a camchain tensioner mod for the earlier bikes you can do, which stops the rattle, lengthens the life of the chain, which I'm about to fit. Honda brought one out later to resolve the problem but you can modify your current one.
Sorry, no specs, and can't seem to find any in my manual. |
RE: cam chain
I've only got about 40k on mine and the rattle from then chain worries me with how bad it sounds

RE: cam chain
If you're worried about the noise, the best option is to replace the chain, which is a bit of a job if you're not a bike mechanic, but it's not the worst one by far....I've heard of Hurricanes with 127000 miles up, a total of 7 camchains from new, but no other problems, no oil use, no speedo couplings, nothing ! If you've done 40 000 miles, or even kilo's, replace the chain. Mine's done 38000 miles, and will be getting its THIRD camchain next week, with modified tensioner.WEMOTO in the UK have the modified tensioner, and camchains are cheap. I have pics of camchain removal if you want to have a go yourself....

RE: cam chain
Shadow1, are you using a split cam chain with a master link or a Honda OEM type that is endless (requiring the cases to be split)?
|
RE: cam chain
Split DID chain - they'r 2 links too long so have to be shortened. This next one will be rivetted I think........
|
RE: cam chain
my cam chain use to rattle when it was cold and since i did two track days with the bike it has not made a noise maybe they get a build up in the adjuster.

RE: cam chain
hey shadow1 if you get the chance I would like to see the pics... I'm an ase certified mechanic, so hopefully I can get in there and get the job done. Where did you find the DID split chain for the bike when ever I have looked them up the only thing that it shows it the factory chain.

RE: cam chain
DID camchain part no is SCA-0412A sdh152L (at least that's what it says on the box)
As mentioned before, it's two links too long. Hope the pics came through OK....? |
RE: cam chain
I started the cam chain replacement today. When I figure out how to post the pictures you'll have them, or I can e-mail them to you incl details and pics of the modified tensioner.

RE: cam chain
It would be nice to see a picture of themodified tensioner.

RE: cam chain
Here's a link to an old discussion on cam chains. It's not a new topic with these. ;)

RE: cam chain
Thanks Dad, I'm right in the middle of a replacement, some very useful pointers there.
|
RE: cam chain
When I get around to it sometime in March or April, I'll replace the tensioner and cam chain and do a write-up about it. Something tells me there is a whole lot of suck involved though.

RE: cam chain
The CCT is like a hydraulic lifter. As oil from the CC drops down it fills the cavity below the plunger of the CCT. This action takes up play that is present as the CCT spring holds the slipper in place but offers little resistance to the variations in the chain due to engine vibrations. The hydraulic pare of the CCT acts like a shock absorber. When the bike is at rest and the CC is at its tightest position, oil is forced out of the cavity and past the plunger. You have to have some leakage or the chain will become too tight. Upon startup you will here a rattle until the cavity is full again. As the walls of the cavity and the plunger wear the effects of the CCT lessen and it will have to be replaced. The more the chain rattles the quicker it will ware out as well.
The type and condition of the oil and change frequency play a big part in CCT longevity. I bought my bike with 12,000 miles on it. I had to replace the CCT at 15,000 miles. I have 45,000 on the bike now and only have a slight rattle until the bike is warmed up. What’s normal play and what’s not? To loose, things rattle. To tight, the chain wares out and breaks. I am happy with a little rattle at startup, not much, just a little. |

RE: cam chain
If you Google DID camchain there are a number of outlets worldwide who have them - you need one with 150 pins.Local ones (DID)here have 152 pins, so we shorten by 2 pins. If all else fails, I can buy one here for you and ship it, cost about $70US with shipping, airmail. They are selling in the UK for about US$140 retail, so it's not a bad price. Up to you. Try www.cyclepages.com for DID camchains in the US.
