Buying a older model, things to look for
Been 9 years since I sold my CBR 1000F. Been thinking of buying another for a while when I noticed one for sale today and have the wifes approval.
It's a 1996 model with a low 20k (kilometres not miles) on the clock. In great condition but it's been out of rego for 3 years. Yet to confirm if it's had a service.
The bike is a 4 hour drive away so I haven't seen it yet but the owner sent me a bunch if pics and it does look look good buy.
Tyres are ok.. Just wondering if any extra areas need attention of I go and inspect it.

These bikes are pretty sturdy and at 20K miles, she's not even run i yet.
Cam chain rattle is the main bug-bear with these bikes, though not terminal.
If it's got the factory exhaust, check the down pipes and collector box for rust/leaks.
If it hasn't been run for three years it'll need re-commissioning, the carbs will need a thorough clean, a squirt of oil in each cylinder and all fluids changed.
Otherwise just the usual things as with every bike, fork seals/fork stanchions, chain, sprockets...ect.
Finally, it will have the linked brakes like the Blackbird, so a bit more complicated to bleed.

So, it's either down the South East (Naracoorte or Mt Gambier), Mildura way or up near Port Augusta??
Did you end up getting it? Hawk's on the money for the checklist but don't forget wheel bearings. I had a front bearing collapse on a '91 that made life interesting but very uncomfortable for a short while!
Cheers, SB
