Default Boingks '88 CBR1000F

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but not the bike game - I've had half a dozen or so bikes over the last 4 years and all but one were bought as non-runners... I've been learning the hard way I guess! Anyway, what brings me here is the latest aquisition; a 1988 CBR1000F.

Before I get all excited and carried away over that, I'd better explain why I chose the CBR over something else. It all started when I was looking for my first 'big bike' - our licensing system here prohibits anything over 650cc - and was cruising the internet and local dealers to try and find something I liked... and could afford.

One afternoon down at the local Honda dealership they had an '87 CBR1000F that'd come in as a part trade for a new bike. It wasn't much to look after the last owners dodgy spray-job, but it was all there. After I looked it over they asked if I'd like a test ride. Would I ever!

I signed a few papers and after extricating the bike from the showroom I was quickly hunting for my favourite test loop; a few corners and long straights coupled with some more interesting scenarios like tight, linked off camber corners and a rutted bridge. It went very well...

...and so I decided to give her some throttle. Waaaaaa-HAAAA! WOW! Now that was some power! After slowing down I tried it a few more times over various stretches of road and quickly developed a liking for the bike. Unfortunately it was a bit out of my budget so I decided on a private-sale GSX-1100EF instead.

As it stands now the GSX is being sold off for parts because it simply needs more work then it is worth, and I am once again on the hunt for a large bike. Or was, as a quiet night at work and a mobile phone with internet connection resulted in me agreeing to buy a 1988 CBR1000F!

So, here she is:

A few small scratches on the fairing and a tear in the seat but other than that shes alright. Classic camchain rattle and 60,000km on the clocks. Can't wait to pick her up!

I'll post more when I've taken delivery and gotten her road-ready.

Cheers - boingk

Cheers kiwi, nice bike haha.

Anywho, with the camchain rattle... is that just a nuisance or is it legitimately bad for the engine? I still haven't been able to find that out, I mean I know how an engine works and have rebuilt a few but I'm still trying to find out if the rattle on these is acceptable or not.

Cheers - boingk

Cam chain rattle is par for the course, no problems, if you want to quieten it down run 20w50 oil in it, it helps a bit.

Welcome boingk!

The rattle should go away when the engine is warmed up. Hydraulic tensioner. Download a manual from the forum, if you haven't already, and drop into the 'Saloon' anytime to talk about almost anything...the first round is on you though.

As davetheporn said, the rattle is normal but should go away as the engine warms up. If it doesn't go away, then you may need a new tensioner.

'pom' is what Ozzies call people from England, usually "stinkin' poms" if they ever beat us at something
