Bike ran great when i parked it but......
 

So a couple weeks ago I was riding my dad's 93 1000F and it was running as usual. I parked it and came back a few days later and its running really rough and will not really even idle. It sounds like its running on 2 or 3 cylinders, but im stumped why itstarted doing this on its own.

Any ideas what to check 1st? Oh, and it has 32k miles on it. Thanks

Take it for a run and see if it clears - I suspect something carb related.

Sounds like the battery may have lost some of its charge for some reason??:eek:
They can get all weird when the spark drops off even just bit.?

Give her a quick charge before you go ripping into the carbs or fuel system ..:eek:

Here here cbr classic. Good thought. Had the same problem before. Stale fuel can also cause it but strange to come on suddenly after only a couple of days. Did you fuel up on your way home?

I just started looking at the bike now and saw the rubber boot between the air box and carbs has big tears in it. Could this be a problem? I figured a tear between the carb and the cylinder would be a problem but not where mine is. It does smell like its running kinda rich too. I guess i'll seal that tear and see what happens. Any other ideas?

I would have thought that a tear there would cause the bike to run lean. If it smells rich I can think of a few things. The choke may be stuck open. Check the operation of the cable & mechanism. While the tank is raised have a look at the plugs. They will tell you if it's running rich. Also a stuck needle & seat or debris stuck under a needle & seat. Drain the fuel from the carbie bowls via the screw plug on the bottom of each bowl. Then start the bike. It will take a while but it may clear any dirt etc from the needles. Also water in the fuel can cause havoc. I found 1/2 cup of metho (alcohol) will absorb the water & allow it to pass through the jets.

Arhh, so you say to run the bike dry after draining the carb bowls.

No. The sudden filling of the carbies when you crank over the starter can clear any dirt from under the needles as they are completely open because you have drained the fuel. Doesn't always work but if it does it saves a lot of time.

hey all, if you guys remember when i joined the forum this was the identical problem i had with my bike, it turned out to be all in the carbs, and rick619, it also ran perfect when parked, sat for two weeks due to rain, when i pulled it back out, had the exact symptoms as yours. i replaced the idol jets, completly cleaned the carbs with compressed air, ran great after. let me know. ride safe

Mine had splits in the intake rubbers, run like a pig and the revs kept rising (too much air)
