FOOTPEG SCRAPING - MADE EASY !
I have done the rear wheel swap out on my 87 CBR1000F.
I bought a rim from a JUNKED 1990 CBR and swapped it out.
You do NOT have to change the swingarm, but you're limited to about 170 x 55 tire.
You might be able to get a 180 in there, but it starts getting tight.

The brake arm stabilizer bar needs to be modified to get around the tire as well.
And then there are different spacers that need to go in the wheel.

If you want more details or pics, let me know.

Here are a couple of pics of the rear wheel . .
sorry I don't have any better ones, or close-ups . . . I have since sold the bike and moved on to an 02 Blackbird XX.
I REALLY wish I could have kept the Hurricane as well -- I loved that bike !!

As mentioned earlier, the wheel was from an 90 CBR.
I modified the brake stablilizer arm to go out around the new, wider tire.
The stabilizer arm is only there to keep the caliper from spinning around, so anything goes as long as you keep it rigid and "in line". I welded a new piece of metal to the outside of the arm, then cut out a 4 inch section of the original arm where the new tire would have hit.
The original (stock) tire was a 140. I ended up putting a 170ZR55 on, and I think you might get away with a 180, but I wanted to keep the plastic mud guard on. Even the 170 tire ended up rubbing on the plastic guard a little bit.
The first ride I took with the new tire, I ended up scraping the foot pegs! It was AMAZING how much more leaning I could do, and still feel comfortable with the bike.

I've run a 180 on the rear from day one.

It will rub the chain guard if you align it incorrectly. You don't have to trash the chain guard either. Just put a small notch in the guard where the tire may rub. The 180s have a lip that varies slightly. Mine rubbed once because I aligned it incorrectly and made it's own notch.. LOL

Slap a 180 on there.. Looks better I think...

190 is pushing it.

Anyone up to redesign the swing arm and slap a 280 on there?

Hey:

With a 90/newer wider rear rim, You dont have to change the swingarm to a newer one as long as you stay
to a 170 tire and remove the hugger fender chain guard, a larger tire requires a mod to the brake stay.
A 90/ newer swingarm and caliper with bracket and spacers allows a 190 with a small trim of the chain guard where
the tire touches the chain guard. I made a 1 1/2" wide by approx 3" high slot in the chain guard and I can run any
190 with no issues. I also changed to the newer swingarm and caliper/bracket and spacers as I had a wrecked
donor bike I also wanted try the linked brakes and changed to the newer forks and front wheel.

Good Luck

cbr1988, you do not need a newer swingarm to have a 190 fit on a 87-88... i dont think there is any way to still use the stock chainguard tho... the inside dimension of the swingarm i believe is 12.75" which is the same for all of hondas liter class bikes. they just stuck us with a 3.5" rim, but fortunately we can do something about that...

Hey :

No disrespect hurricane 1000, but a reading lesson might be at hand for you, and an spelling one for me
as I never stated a newer swingarm was the only way to a 190 on an earley bike, but in the first line I stated
you dont (don't) have to change to a newer swingarm but a mod to the brake stay was needed to go beyond a
170 tire. LOL

I did state a newer swingarm was how I did it, as I had one to use. For me it was easier to use all the newer stuff
since I planned to go with the linked brake setup on my 1988 CBR, later with a Dunlop 207 190/50

Also not all 190 are the same width and a Dunlop 207 190 is wider than a Metzeler me1 190 on a 5.5 rim with the
same aspect ratio.

I hope this clears the mud up.
