My '91 runs at normal operating temperature while at speed. When at a light, the temperature spikes a bit. Any ideas?

Define 'a bit'.

To me 'a bit' is normal.

If she's red-lining first make sure the cooling fan is coming on, then you could try flushing the cooling system to get any accumulated cr4p out, also check the cooling fins of the radiator to make sure they're not all bunged up with bugs, also check you're running the correct coolant/anti-freeze mixture.

If you want to do a proper job, drop the radiator and reverse flush with a hose.

Also what is the air temperature like where you are, these bikes tend to run a little hot in warmer climates

During the summer months 90 or so, mine will run about a third of the gauge on the highway. In traffic or pulling hills behind traffic and especially at a light the gauge goes to halfway in a heartbeat and the fan kicks in and stays until I get rolling again.I've not noticed it getting hotter than about half on the gauge once the fan comes on.
It hates stop and go traffic and so do I. Try not to get in that, first closest highway and up to the mountains

As long as it's not up in the red and spewing coolant out, don't worry. With the enclosed nature of these bikes, unless you're moving the heat has no way out.

Make sure your fan is working (run at idle and see what goes on), the coolant is topped up and clean and just ride the thing mate.

Owning one of these bikes in Australia as many of us do this is common. As soon as I slow down from highway speeds and get to a set of traffic lights etc she starts to creep up. My Blackbird is the same. I've had my BB run 100 degrees C on a hot day while cruising along. These bikes get hot. Thats the nature of them. Dont worry about it though...its a Honda ! Just ride her she can handle it !!!!
