Default '88 Hurricane - Rear Brake Disk

Guys,

I just picked up (this weekend) most of a '88 Hurricane as a parts bike. Looking at it, it may well be salvegeable - will need to look into it further - but the rear brake disk is definitely damaged. Badly grooved and scored - looks like it was ridden with the pads worn down into the metal and possibly with one pad missing. Anyone have any idea what other rotors migh interchange with an '88 wheel?

See if you can make the bike usable and what is needed for thatbefore spending money on an expensive rear disk. The rear disk is not very important to be perfect on any bike.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I've been told it ran when parked, although it is not quite startable yet. I brief inspection gives me hope - but to be serviceable, it is going to need parts and labor. Plastic is mostly there and can be made at least serviceable. Will need mufflers, pipes look good. Electric system has been tampered with, but doesn't appear to be too severe. Tank is sound, with light rust in it - still has some gas, but that will have to go. The essentials appear sound, just that rear disk as an obvious issue.

First step is definitely to get it running and see what I've got. I'm just trying to gauge the costs of those things I can see are/will be issues.

Go here http://www.ebcbrakes.com/catalogues.html Open the appropriate catalogue, find the number of the replacement disc for your bike, then check the catalogue for other bikes that take the samedisc. Then you can check ebay or other souces for a used disc. Usually, you can find them on ebay, in decent condition, for $25 or so

Thanks! I wasn't aware of that resource. Unfortunately, if I read the tables correctly, the rear disk on the '88 is a MD1001 - no suffix. The ONLY place that shows up is the '87/'88 Hurricanes. The MD1001 does show up - with a left/right suffix - on a number of other Hondas - the VFR, Sabre, and Magna series of machines. If they would fit, that would give me a lot more options to search for.

Thanks for the input - it at least gives me something to start from.

For mufflers look in auto shops for round stainless they are a lot cheaper then bike ones. You can get baffles for them to give them back pressure. john

For what it's worth, a little info. The pic is of a stock disc pulled fromthe right (i believe) front of an85 V65 Sabre (VF1100S) (don't ak me for it- there is a reason that it was replaced to begin with). This should equate to EBC's number MD1001RS. Note the disc is slotted, not drilled. Also, stamped on the disc is MinimumThickness 4mm. My Haynes manual doesn't list a minimum thickness for the 88 Hurricane- it shows 5 mm for 89 thru 92 and 4 mm for 93 onward. If your bike specs out at 4 mm, and you don't mind a slotted disc, stock equivalent to the MD1001RS would probably work

Thanks for the input - I guess the real question now is what is the impact/meaning of the LS/RS suffix on the disc listing? Is there a specific difference between the "generic" DM1001 and its left/right side listings for other machines? If not, it opens a lot of possibilities.

I appreciate all of the input from the group - it helps when you are poking about in unknown territory.
