Default 88 Hurricane Annual Maintenance Help

Howdy folks,

I kinda fell into an 88 CBR1000f[/i][/b] this year and I’ve been riding the begeezers out of it (500 miles in about a week). I have taken it by a Honda shop here in Dayton, Ohio and they say she sounds great. It's got about 14,200 miles on it and Id like to change the fluids, plugs and anything else that y'all recommend. Honda says that they can do it for about $150.00, I figure that I can do it cheaper.

This is all pretty new to me so I'd like a little help if at all possible.

Recommendations for oil[/b]?
I used to have a Harley and they had a primary (Transmission) fluid and regular motor oil in another compartment. Is this the same for Honda?

Radiator Fluid[/b] - Should I go ahead and change that out too? What kind of coolant should I use?

Plugs / Wires[/b] - What recommendations do you have here?

Air Cleaner[/b] - What brand / kind do y'all recommend?

Am I missing anything?

Thanks again for all of your help...

All of your answers are in this book.
You can probably find it on Amazon.com also.

NO they are NOT the same - this is a PROPER MOTORCYCLE...

Oil - 10w-40. I use semi synthetic, don't go for fully synthetic, your clutch'll slip.
radiator- 50% distilled water, 50% anti-freeze
plugs - dpr9ea9, dpr8ea9 (or dpr9eix9 NGK if you want irridium plugs)
AIR cleaner K&N's my personal choice.

Let's give him a hand, Bayarearider, he's 1 New 2 Used to 1940's technology
Lord help us, a SEPARATE GEARBOX.....he he

Download the manual as BaR says - it's all there.
Best of luck, and welcome to the Forum

1600 in two days!!! I think that my pecker would fall off, half of the time when I get off of my CBR it's numb along with my right hand and my a$$. WOW, that is a marathon ride to be sure!! My hat's off to ya...

So i should also flush the clutch and break fluids too eh?

I've never done that one before... I have seen threads onthat here on this forum, I'll look them up.

I'll look up the cam Chain Tensoner too. This is going to be more involved that I thought. I excited.... :-)

Thanks for you help folks and No worries BayAreaRider, it's all good.

Any more input will be appreciated. I expect to put a quite few more miles on her this year and I want her to be tip top...

Welcome to the forum

One thing that you absolutely have to do as well , if you are not the first owner of the bike: wheels bearings, they come very cheapand they are a breeze to change, but this couls cahneg your life, beleive me i had a scare and i was quite lucky, ask shadow1!

As for the oil i put 10w50semi synthetic in summer it helps cool down the engine in trafic and also yu might want to wire a maual overide on your radiator fan..always handy when your astuck and the trafic is not going anywhere..

Have a great ride they are wonderful bikes!

If your *****'s wonky and your hand is numb, did you stop along the way ?
(sorry - couldn't resist )
the 1600 miler was a lad from Ozzzzzzztralia as I recall. He rode back after 2 days.......missed the whole rally....he he Good blokes, but can't play rugger ( waits for the Oz sh1tstorm to erupt) Bluebeard, Coopz and co - are you there ?[X(]
If you have that kind of vibration it's time to check the balancer shaft - easy to do - check recent posts for details. BIG difference in vibration ! Vibration starts around 4500RPM and gets worse ? YUP - check the shaft.....
A numb a$$ comes standard on longer rides - more foam in the seat or a Corbin will make a big difference to how much it hurts !
+1 on Dragons' comments on the wheel bearings (Bonjour Karl)

Any problems, give a shout - we're spread all over the world, so someone's generally on the Forum 24/7 to help.
Nice bike, BTW.

Re Synthetic oil in 1000f
Just reading Shadow 1 replyI used synthetic oil ie Mobil 1 racing 4t 15w50 & Amsoil 10w40/20w50 for 7 years and 52,000klms and never had a clutch problem never replaced clutch plates and this was with a dozen or so track days . Sold 1000f and bought B/Bird New 9/07 has done 8200 klms used Amsoil 10w40 since 2500klms no problems 2 trackdays , Motorcycle Specific Synthetics fine wont cause clutch slip Auto syns will ie Energy Conserving/Friction Modified
