88 Hurricane 1000 won't turn over
 
Hello, names George. I'm in need of some help. I have a 88 Hurricane 1000 an it's not turning over at all. I've cleaned up a lot of terminals an such. Everytime I try an start it all I get is a click an the starter tries to turn but doesn't. I know the battery is good, solenoid clicks but nothing happens. What should I do?

I little more info may help, has the bike ever run since you have owned it, have you done anything to it since it last run or have you tried run starting it?

I got it an it didn't run. I was told it ran when he had it but he had a kid an it sat for about a year or so. I wanted to roll start it but my clutch reservoir is bad so I can't do it :( only thing I've done is a new battery an clean some terminals up trying to make sure it's a clean connection. I also took the starter out an hit the start button an the starter did turn though

Check the 30A fuse is good coming from the battery lead and if you can access it, short across the terminals of the solenoid with a spanner or screwdriver blade to rule out the solenoid being faulty. Failing that the only other item in the circuit is the ignition feed via the start button which again you should be able to frig to rule out the starter circuit (ie. run a 12v feed from the battery and flash it across the solenoid start switch contact to rule out the button and ignition switch).

It's hard with a none running bike. One that does not turn over, makes it even more difficult to give specific suggestions.

So. How about some things to do, look at.

1, take the time, fix, resolve your clutch issue.

2, you might check fuses make sure they are good, not corroded. Check some grounds on the frame.

If you are thinking it's a poor connection issue.

You, could look at the safety switches, are working.

I myself, aside from the clutch issue is resolved. I would add a tablespoon of oil into each cylinder, and let sit for a day.

Other then that, I'd want to ensure the motor turns free and not locked up, or frooze up.
Might have to take the left side engine cover off, and hand crank it over, to know it turns over.that the engine is free.

A starter can spin freely, but under load be weAK enough to not turn under load.

Do you smell gas ? Carbs leaking gas. Into cylinders?

How's the oil level ?

Have tried jumping the starter ? With jumper cables from a vehicle? Or volt meter at the starter, see how much amp, volts you are getting?

Some ideas and suggestions, to look at.

I've replaced all fuses, checked grounds, sanded grounds down to ensure good connection. Oil level is good an clean oil. I'm going to try an turn it over by hand. I think I've done this before an it was fine but it's been a little bit so I'll try again to be sure

To check if the engine turns over, stick it on the centre stand, click it into gear and turn the rear wheel.

So I don't need to turn it by the crank? I'll try that out. I haven't tried starting it with no plugs in it. I'll do that here shortly
