The second option - and you don't even have to drop the pan. A few members have now done the fix, just removing the alternator/shaft and sliding a wire down to release the alternator chain tensioner.

I got the new alternator dampner in and got the bike running. Then pulled the carbs to rejet them. Pulled the tank to de-rust and paint and started on my swingarm swap. This weekend I'll be working swapping fork seals and doing some paint work as well as strengthening my rear shock mount for the swing arms and changing out the rear hub since I expect it or the sprocket to be bent.
