Default 1000f Hurricane - rear wheel bearings...

Hi all, me again! Just ordered the rear bearings and called the local shop to ask how much to fit, then thought i maybe able to replace them myself?? Are they pressed in hydraulically ?
It would save a couple of days of farting around if i can do them at home!!

Cheers (again!) guys.

Make sure you replace the dust seals as well. They get damaged as you remove them. Replacing the dust seals and bearings is an easy thing to do. A simple flat screw driver under the lip of the dust seal will remove it. The bearings can be driven out with a simple hammer and steel punch. I used a piece of steel 1/4" bar I picked up from Home Depot. You'll be driving them out by hitting the inner race of the bearing from the opposite side of the wheel, which will damage them, but they're being replaced anyway so it doesn't matter. The spacer between the two bearings has enough latteral play to expose the inner edge of the inner race of the bearing to drive them out.For driving the new ones in, tapping with a hammer around the edge of the bearing is fine until you get it flush with the wheel. Then you'll need a socket that is slightly smaller in diameter than the bearing. Tap slowly until it seats. There is a spacer inside the wheel that the axle goes through that is in between the bearings. It sets the propper distance between them. If you've got a shop manual, it will help. The bearings are of a standard size, so you should be able to pick them up from a local bearing supply house.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Hiya Adam.

Great looking bike. Your bearings should be straightforward to change, so hopefully you should have them done soon.

I like the colour as it is the first to enter the UK in 1986. Is yours original or has it been resprayed? When I 1st got mine it was blue, but the colour is as it should be. The bike is currently in restoration at the mo, and although later than I would like it should be on the road in the next 6 weeks. The whole bike has had a major overhaul with the engine nearly completed. The frame and attactments have been blasted and powdercoated so the next phase of the rebuild should start in the next two weeks. Then the MOT and we're back on the road. Hopefully with lots of sunshine.

All the best

Alex
