rotor upgrade
 

Hi Folks,

I am a newbie to the forum. Please accept my apologies if this question has already been addressed before. I am familiar with the search function and have done my best already to find and answer.

Is there a better than stock option for replacing the front brake rotors? What have you all tried, and were you happy with it? I see the MD1008 is available as an aftermarket item, but I have had some grievances at the race track with EBC rotors. Does anyone offer a floater for this model?

Having found this thread, I began to look in the updated Galfer catalog for a wave rotor.

One of their distributors shows the rotor at $170 each, which makes a total of $340 before shipping. What isn't clear is whether it is a floating rotor conversion (i.e. aluminum carrier), as most of their models replace OEM floaters. I won't get my hopes up too high but have inquired about this and will revisit the forum when I have an update.

EBC makes aftermarket pro lite rotors, too, and I think they're floating.
Around the same price.

Thanks for the URL. Unfortunately it seems that Galfer does not make a floating rotor for the Hurricane, as explained to me by Galfer Technical Support. This, in spite of the fact that some of their own distributors advertise the DF009W as such. It's a solid wave rotor with no option for a button/carrier part. I suspect the same holds true for the EBC.

I will probably go with the Galfer anyway as it's still cheaper (and probably better) than OEM!

I placed an order tonight for two Galfer DF009W rotors from CycleBrakes.net. They have a low listed price and their customer service responded to my questions immediately. I will followup with photos and a review of the brakes with my new sintered HH pads shortly! :icon_bike:

So my Cyclebrakes.net order was smooth and extremely fast. Not to sound like a commercial but I've spent a few grand on obscure brake parts in the last year and I don't appreciate being burned. Needless to say I am very pleased with my order.

My fingerprints aside, the solid wave rotors look nice and are surprisingly thick:

Hardened stainless with CNC machined bolt seats. I am wondering whether to follow Galfer's recommendation not to void the warranty by using other makes of pads. Unfortunately, I cannot find a sintered HH pad by them like EBC and DP sell, so most likely it will be EBC for pads.

those look nice, let us know how they perform. i am looking to do brakes over the winter and i might have to pick a set of those bad boys up.

I'll check back in after this weekend. The race is at Thunderhill and I am hoping the brakes are a match.. Galfer waves and EBC HH pads and we've got our fingers crossed.

Bio248, I can only say the rotor replacement was satisfactory for me. The pulsing I felt with my stock Hurricane rotors disappeared and I noticed an improvement in braking after I'd broken in the new rotors, at the track, with new brake fluid and new EBC 142 sintered HH pads.

The Galfer wave rotor exhibits a strange feel under 30 MPH. It is apparently not meant for low speed use, and it feels (and sounds) as if it is scraping the pads at lower speeds, but at >30mph the performance is phenomenally good. I can't say whether it's good for street use but at the track I've had a great experience after 4 laps of gentle break in.

do they give any solid reasons on why it isnt meant for low speed use?
