929 front end on a 98 900RR

Does anyone know if the enitre front end from an 01-02 929 will fit on a 98 900RR? I know the bearings are the same part number, but I don't know if the thickness for the steering head (the hole in the frame where the yoke stem lives) is the same.

Can someone measure the thickness of the steering head for me?

Cheers.

From what I understand it is a direct bolt on to the 900rr, I know a few people who have done it. But have since lost touch with them

Yes the 929/954 is pretty much a direct bolt on. You have to make sure you have the same bearings. The 00-01 929 might still have the ball bearings as the 98-99's. And I think the 02 954 does have ball bearings, but the 03 954 has tappered roller bearings. I know this first hand as I have a 99 900RR with LOTS of mods....

954 forks/tripples
929 rear shock
954 rotors/calipers
1000RR coils
RC51 wheels SP2 5spokers.

You can check out all of what I did to the old girl at the Zone!

I just swapped a 929 front end onto my '99 900rr.......well, I paid somebody to. But man, what a difference !!! I stuck a Michelin power pure on the front and it handles like a bicycle (compared to what it felt like before). My forks were blown and the rotors were warped, so when I saw the 929 front end for sale, I bought it immediatly. Still got some more work to do, but I'm in love with this bike.

what about the plastics? Did you keep the 99 plastics or swap to the 929 fairings?

Yakkis 04-14-2011 05:33 AM

I kept the '99 fairings. I like them better, plus he didn't have the 929 fairings. He was building two race bikes and deceided he was to old to go 170mph down the back straight at Road Atlanta so he kept the '05 gsxr 600 with three cylinders and parted out his 900rr. It was a '94 900rr with '04 cbr 1000 race fairings and an rc51 tail with custom subframe. I bought the tail too but the subframe wouldn't fit so he gave me my money back. Great guy, he did the swap for my old front end which had blown forks and warped rotors but at least the forks were straight. Did I mention that I friggin' love this bike. You know what they say, fifth time's a charm..........

I have the same question, except I have a 95 900. Not sure of changes from to the 99 models. Any help would be great!

Yakkis 07-24-2011 04:56 PM

It'll go on the '95 too. The guy I bought it from had a '94, which was what he was going to put it on in the first place.
