Integrated tail light on a '96 F3

OK, after seeing some of the integrated tail lights, and not wanting to change over to a 98 and up tail, I decided to 'upgrade' my stock 96 F3 tail light.

First, I bought one of these:
Trailer Wiring Converter 14.95 at Autozone

It's pretty much the same thing as some of the aftermarket bike companies sell as a 'Motorcycle Tail Light Integrator'

The instructions in the package aren't great, so here's the basics:

The instructions mention that the converter has a 'CAR SIDE' and "TRAILER SIDE", but it doesn't have any markings to tell you which is which. The side with the 5 wires (vs 4 wires on the other side) is the 'CAR SIDE'
Either cut the harness and solder your connections or simply unplug the bullet connectors and buy bullet connectors to plug the adapter wires into the harness

On the side that 'comes from the bike'
1. Attach your brake light wire (From the bike) to the red wire.
2. Right Turn Signal Wire goes to Green Wire
3. left Turn Signal Wire goes to Yellow Wire
4. the tail ligh wire goes to the Brown wire.
5. Connect the ground wires for the tail and brake lights to the white wire.

On the "Trailer Side" of the converter
On the side of the wires that 'goes to the lights'
1. Attach the wire going to the left turn signal bulb to the Yellow Wire
2. Attach the wire going to the right turn signal bulb to the green wire
3. Attach both of your tail light wires to the Brown wire
Take remaining ground wires from the tailight bulbs and connect them to the white wire

Before tucking everything away, make certain the tail, brake and then turn signals all work.

Note.
The turns are bright (Brake light brightness) but when you apply the brakes, they will flash faster, unless you get a variable load flasher, probably due to there no longer being separate turn and brake lights, causing less power to be drawn and making the flasher 'think' a bulb is out.

Here's what it will look like when done

awesome i was going to get a convertor myself and hack off the plate area nice to know it actually works before i start

It's not too hard, (make sure you simply twist the wires together before making permenant connections, so that you can test it before soldering or adding terminals etc.)

I'm thinking of adding some sort of bright led strip to use as the brake light to add a bit of additional visibility to the tail when braking.

I cut my fender even with the bottom of the rear fairings and went straight across on the rear portion just below the bracing built into it. I'll post some pics this evening.

where did you decide to mount your plate? im thinking about making a bracket to go up under the tail then use lighted studs to mount and illuminate the plate.

I lust used the stock mount for now, and drilled a couple holes higher up on the part of the rear fender I didn't cut. Sorry I didn't get a chance to get pics yesterday, I'll get a couple at lunch and post them this afternoon
