That's how we did the left fork before redoing it with the proper tools. We went to a store that specialized in high end motorcycle suspension and said that disassembling the fork from below (like you do in the pics) isn't the way you should do it.. but that might have been bike specific. In our case it also was impossible to do without the compression tool because the preload part doesn't just screw out.

If it works for you (and the thread starter) then it's all good!
