Default One more tip

Nice write up. I especially like the angle iron to keep the oil off the header.

One thing that is a really good idea is to prefill the oil filter with oil. This shortens the time the engine runs "dry" upon first startup after the change.

Thanks very much for this howto. It's one of the jobs I want to be able to do myself when I get my bike.

I have also found quite a few nice vids on this as well. Detailed how to's are where it's at. This was a nice one.

Nice. This was beneficial for me as well. I'm getting ready to change the oil and filter for the first time on my first bike.. my newly acquired 1995 CBR F3 and was unsure on what oil to use and if using a brand of oil filter other than the $12.00 Honda dealership one would be inferior. Now I feel comfortable getting a cheaper "off brand" filter and know what oil to use. (It did not come with an owner's manual.)

I also really liked the aluminum L-channel idea. Called my local welder and asked for a scrap piece.. picking that up tomorrow. Thanks again.

One thing I didn't see mentioned at all was the crush washer. I know it doesn't seem incredibly important, but my wiped journal bearings say otherwise.

Oh yeah, those incredibly important things. I say just get a dozen for a few seasons, and change it every oil change.

I bought a used motorcycle (CBR 1000rr) and I'm not sure if the owner used traditional or synthetic. I'm about to change the oil, will it hurt if I put traditional in and it already runs synthetic? Or will I be stuck with synthetic oil from now on? Any help would be appreciated.

nope it doesn't matter.

but my mechanic (BMW, Honda, and Suzuki Certified) said to use Bel-Ray conventional motorcycle oil. And when changing over you should run the bike like 200-300 miles and change the oil again.

I am just on the verge of doing the synthetic to petroleum transition.

If my bike blows up or a black hole appears, I will let ya'll know.

Great. I has always been wondering, when checking the oil, if i need to screw in the stick or not. I see that your bike is/was a f3. Do you think it's the same on the F2 ? (screw in or not when checking oil)

Great how-to, thanks for the tips (everyone). Ill be doing an oil change on my 97 f3 for the first time very soon as the season is pretty much here. Trying to learn as much about the ins and outs of bikes and want to be able to do my own maintenance and mods. You must be one with your beast, inside and out!
