Default flatside carbs

The course of my streetfighter project is leading me towards losing the airbox. I posed this problem to a local tuning shop. This was their response. What do you think? I've always understood flatside carbs to be strictly for racing use only and quite temperamental"

"Thanks for your enquiry. The long and short of it is that you would never achieve the CBR's full power without the airbox. It would also end up with flatspots in the carburation which would be impossible to get rid of, irrespective of what make or stage of jet kit you use. Also, the amount of Dyno time you would use trying to get an at least useable setup, together with the cost of a jet kit, would be prohibitively expensive. The stock carbs are designed by Mikuni, for Honda, inconjunction with the airbox.

The solution is to fit Keihin FCR 33mm racing flatslide carbs and individual filters. The carb kit will cost approx £750 depending on exchange rates, and the filters will run to about another £100. You could fit these yourself and I could supply them jetted and with the correct needle taper at no extra charge. You may need to get cables made for them, but that can be done fairly locally This will give you back the power that you will lose by junking the airbox and then some."

Screw all that -- for less money you could mount a dry NOS kit 40-60hp and have enough left over to buy some dyno time.
