So finally we are back from our trip to sicily.... for those who asked me about details of the job... here is a run-down.
1) remove all the fairings from the bike
2) remove the decals with a hair dryer to soften the glue.
3) remove the sticky goo left behind from the decals - use a powerful engine degreaser and a fine wire brush.
4) sand down all the fairings with 400 dry grit until you achieve the flattest finish.
5) regarding the tank, you have to strip down the paint from the tank. Use a normal paint stripper to get down to the metal of the tank. If you plan to leave the tank for more than a week unpainted, cover the tank with a thin film of cooking oil to prevent rust.
6) buyin the paint. I had to mix my own to achive the desired colours however in the USA
www.colorrite.com is the way to go. This is the link
http://www.colorrite.com/CRPLfactory...mageField.y=10
Remember that what appears black is the pearl siren blue.
7) Buyin the decals.
www.alloutgraphics.com, get the repsol scheme from them. However the sponsor decals of the side fairing are way too large to fit our fairings. So I had to order these individually from
www.xtremedecals.com and chose the smallest size for each set.
8) stuff you need to order from honda before starting the job?? make sure if you need anything order it beforehand do order it NOW and not when teh bike is ready and you are wiaiting for that part to get going. One thing you will need for sure is the black rubber seal of the fuel tank pump because it is a single use item and you dont want a leak from there.
9) A few paiting tips - do not go spray cans... get a pro to do the job. Remember that bikes sustain a lot of abuse, us pressing our crotches on the tanks, flying small stones from the highway etc etc. The paint has to be strong and durable otherwise it will chip like nothing.
in most cases my sprayer applied 2 layers of white primer over all the fairing, 3 layers of base coat and 2 layers of lacquer, each time sanding with 600 wet grit in between each layer.
another important tip is where the large repsol decals sticks on the side fairing. The decal comes with the white background pictured. It is important to tell you sprayer that the he should fade away the line of transition between the red and the orange so that there isnt a line appearing beneath the white decal.
Regarding the application of the decals, dont you dare doing it yourself unless you know what you are doing. It is difficult to get them stuck round the curves and get them bubble free. Also remember that the decals must stick after the base coat application and that lacquer should be sprayed over the decals too to get that ultimate flat finish.
10) the rims were a hell of a headache. Remove all the disk crakes, tyre etc. I would advice you to sand them down till you get to the metal. Spraying them is a 2 man job. Make sure you mask the bearings. Put the rim on a rod through its axle. While the syrayer is spraying , someone should rotate the rim to avoid paint from dripping to the sides.
11) rear sets, passenger pegs and forks - same as above, I used a matte black finish on them.
I cant remember of anything else, if you have any questions just ask on this thread.
Jvracer 04 - the running light is standard in the european model.
