Default Chain/Sprocket Replacement

So after reading some topics about it, I found that replacing the sprocket and chain is recommended around 15,000 miles. I'm at 15,500 with everything original.

I drive a lot of freeway, and don't drive like a mad man doing wheelies everywhere. My sprockets are still square and don't really show signs of wear, and my chain seems fine, fairly clean (lube it every 500 miles, and clean completely every so often).

What are the risks of continuing to ride, could the chain break off and ripe my leg off or something, could I damage something else, or am I ok for awhile?

Curious, how long has anyone used the original chain and sprocket? And what are the average cost of replacing them both with basic aftermarket stuff? I don't really have the funds to replace anything right now. Thanks!!!

Much like tires, the 15k mile increment is merely a suggestion. It is more important that you monitor the condition of the chain. Has it reached the 'replace' marker on the stretch gauge? Are your sprocket teeth rounded off? Does it whirr or kink? If any of that is true, and you would probably know with all the attention you give the chain, it should be replaced along with the sprockets. You could spend anywhere from $140 to $250 on a chain/sprockets kit.

My bike just turned 15,000 last Sunday, and my chain is almost to the change mark on the stretch gauge. my teeth are not perfect, but certainly aren't rounded. I would say you'll be fine until the chain gets to the colored area. then you should do both chain and sprocket replacement. but if the chain isn't there yet, no rush. just don't try to break it =) good luck!!

ya mine is at the replacement mark but like yourself dont have the money to replace sprockets or chain so i inspect it everyday making sure that it is still strong till i have the money to buy sprocket/chain kit, so i pray to god everytime i go out that my chain doesnt snap or something redick happen to hit so i lube it every 500.. tighten when needs to be, also clean the **** out of chain and sprockets, so hopefully i find a job soon that will allow me to buy my desperately needed sprockets nd chain kit also some ******* quoted me 350-400 to do a DID Xring 520 chain/sprocket kit to instal i say F** that sh**T nd just do it yourself, also made a make shift stand out of two cinder blocks lol one on each side of the swing arm if ya down have a stand
does ne body know if that is ok?? lol

My baby had 24K on it when I changed mine. (bought it like that) The 520 conversion is not necessary or recomended for the average daily driver. The 520 chain has a lower tensile strength than the 525 (or 530 which is even stronger). So if you're not at the track trying to gain that tenth of a second stick with the 525. Base, cinder blocks work fine but may scratch the swinger, I personally use milk crates and brag about it everytime someone asks "whats the best stand out there?" They serve as a nice little work bench too keeping my tools within reach.

Wait... you can't afford a chain and sprockets, but you're going to put a 520 kit on?? You know it'll wear out way faster and you'll see no discernable difference right?

Yeah the chain gauge is far from indicating replace, and the sprocket teeth are squared still, I guess I'm fine for awhile then. Thanks.
