As you say "assuming it hasn't moved" anything is possible. But, unfortunately in trying to juggle getting the chain, under tension, on the cam sprockets movement occurred for me. You will find its a bit tight for space in there.

I wouldn't "button the motor up" unless I checked timing was exact in case of movement and I caused damage to a valve.
Best to turn motor over by hand, slowly, feeling for any tightness or error in timing before "button the motor up".
GO SLOW - be correct, was my experience.

Does anyone know where I can find out the part number for a 1987 cbr1000f Hurricane cam chain tensioner!?!?!? The part numbers seem to be easy to find from 1991 on. I have to replace mine now and locating the part is a bit frustrating.

Thx in advance for any help

Hi Happy!

You should use the latest cam chain tensioner with the latest part number. (not 1987 part number.).

FYI, my recommendation is as per the pdf you have read ...

CAM CHAIN AND TENSIONER REPLACEMENT
Parts you will need:
1. CHAIN, CAM (150L or more) 14401-MM5-015 ( Or DID equivalent )
2. CHAIN, CAM joining link.
3. BRACKET, TENSIONER 14500-MZ1-000
4. TENSIONER ARM PIN,HP-14531-KV0-000 14531-KV0-000 – QTY 2
5. PIN (6MM), HP-90607-MM5-000 90607-MM5-000 - QTY 2
6. SLIPPER - HP-14510-MM5-640 14510-MM5-640
7. GUIDE B, CAM CHAIN 14630-MS2-610
8. GASKET, CYL HD CVR, HP-12391-MM5-000 12391-MM5-000
I also recommended
1. O-RING (7.5mmX1.5mm) 91302-HB3-004 - QTY 2
If you have a 1987 or 1988 and are unsure if it has had the CCT retrofit (CCT
Kit 04102-MM5-010 ) then you will need these additional parts <See Appendix
at end> :-
1. PLATE, 14542-MM5-000
2. PLATE, OIL GUIDE 14541-MM5-011

Ahhh so 14500-MZ1-000 is the replacement number/part for the old one? This part will work in other models as well correct?

I have a '96 cbr1000f. I know on earlier models (want to say pre '92 models but could be wrong) they had issues with noisy cam chains, then honda used a different cam chain tensioner to eliminate this issue. Has anyone had issues with a noise cam chain? Mine seems to be a bit noisy and wasn't sure if this was a normal thing or if I should check my cam chain tensioner? Figured I'd ask before I just jump in head first and it turn out to be shallow water

Yea Honda was suppose to fix that problem that the early motors had 87-92 or 93 cant remember when the year was they came out with the better tensioner. I had a 88 1000 that I replaced the tensioner and cam chain becuase it was noisy at 40k. I replaced it with the newer type tensioner 92 or 93 and up. Well it worked good and was quiet.I sold the bike with 63k on her and she was running great and the cam chain was quiet.

Well now I have a 94 CBR 1000F and it sounds like marbles in a tin can when you start her up than once she warms up she is pretty quiet. She has 35K on her. Until she starts rattling all the time I am not going to change the tensioner.

If your cam chain quiets down after warm up than I would not worry about it. If it rattles all the time its time to change the tensioner and might as well do the chain. Some of the cam chain guides may need to be replaced also while your in there. You really cant get in there and check the tensioner if its rattling after warm up its worn out. Some guys I have heard just change the tensioner and have not had any problems at all. Its up to you. The 92 0r 93 and up are suppose to be the better tensioner as you know. But I have heard of guys having the same problems with the new tensioners 93 and up as well as the older models.

yeah, it quiets down after warming up, but it is tempting to just go ahead and change out the tensioner in hopes that I wont have any issues as soon. Mine's got about 35k on her so it may not hurt, and I need to check the valve clearance so I may just go ahead and change out the chain while I'm in there. Get to it early to help eliminate having to do it further down the road

I dont blame you at all. its a good piece of mind when your done. Trust me I know and have done the job, its not that hard to do. I did my 88 when she had 51 k on her not 40k ...Went back and looked at some of my old posts. One more thing when you take your plug wires off be careful with them as they break real easy on the inside of the plug wire and you wont know it from looking at the outside. You will know when you start her up though. I thought I had my timing marks off a hair, nope it was a broken plug wire, she was running on 3 cylinders. As me how I know. lol
