HOW TO - CARB SYNC / BALANCE - USING CBR1000F AS EXAMPLE

A Guide to Carburetor Synchronizing

Carb balance will affect the response, smoothness, mileage, performance and running temperature of your engine.
Carb synchronisation consists of adjusting each throttle valve for carburettors or fuel injection throats so that they

pass as much fuel-air mixture as all the others. This balances the load carried by each piston.
If one carb is opened further than the others that cylinder will run hotter than the others.

The other carbs will also supply a richer mixture and mileage will suffer.
The actual mechanics of carb balancing vary a lot. Some bikes are balanced by adjusting the relative length of the
throttle cableswhile others have a system of levers with adjustment screws but they all adjust the relative position of
the throttle slides or throttle butterflies of each carb to each other or to a master preset carb.

A workshop manual for your model is very useful as the balancing procedure for different models can vary in detail.
Familiarise yourself with the section on throttle valve synchronizing.

Tools& Instruments -
Sample Guideof Carburetor Synchronizing Tools / Instruments

A set of Guages

SyncPRO™ Carburetor Tuner. The SyncPRO™ is a non-mercury, fluid filled carburetor synchronizer

Carbtune Pro - The mercury free Carbtune Pro is used vertically like a mercury manometer and works in a similar way - except you have a column of stainless steel rising and falling. No chance of that leaking!

Twinmax Electronic Carburettor Balancer - an electronic differential depression gauge.

CBR1000F - L 1990 CARB SYNC - HOW TO .......

Raise Tank on prop

Identify Tank circlip from RHS

Place cloth under to catch dropped parts

Now further open tank with your own prop.

I used a windscreen squeegy as prop

No we can "fully" see the carbs and get to the adjusters

We dont need to touch the petrol lock

This is Carb 1 vacuum attachment point

This is Carb 2 vacuum attachment point

This is Carb 3 vacuum attachment point

This is Carb 4 vacuum attachment point

Circlips removed with long pliers

Place a rag under to catch dropped parts

Remove this hose this end only to get to carb 3

Set up the vacuum guages

Remove the rubber plugs with fingers and lever with screwdriver

Attach the guages

Start engine - at correct temp - adjust for ballance

Alternatly - connect a CarbTune Pro

This needs balancing / synchronizing

The philips adjuster for carb 1 (balance to carb 2)

1 & 2 are now balanced

The philips adjuster for carb 3 (balance to carb 2)

Balanace all carbs to be the same as carb 2

Replace parts & Test Ride

RESULTS - Here are the results of this Carb sync...

[hr]

WHAT DID THIS MEAN & ACHIEVE?
1. The bike was more than2 times (200%)outside the limits @ 65,000km.
2. The guages got within the limits @ 62%
3. The CarbTune Pro was easier to use, got better calibration and got within the limits @ 25%
4. Before the Sync I did not notice any degredation in bike performance. After the Sync I did not "hear" any differance at idle (this surprised me). After Sync there was a remarkable improvement in low speed torque/smoothness (well worth all my effort). There was a slight lowering of normal bike temprature (cylinders working together / not fighting with each other). There was no noticable differance in top speed/power (although I tested to top speed I could not tell any difference - which Im not surprised of.)

Great post! Just a note, you wouldnt notice any difference at idle as the carbs are using the idle circut and not the power circut which is where you made your adjustments at. I remember the old circuts from way back. MR. C FIMPA is how I remember them....

C - Choke

F- Float
I - Idle
M - Metering
P - Power
A - Acceleration

Good Job!

**** hot Martin!!!
I did not notice this earlier.. ?

I must have been fighting off Shadow1 in a PM duel we had a while ago

So well done mate.....
You certainly went to some trouble to get this all together ..

I am sure it will be reference by heaps of owners ..

100% effort !! ..many thanks from all here on the forum that will benefit from your work ... and especially those with CBR1000's

PS
I notice you figured out how to get pics to show within posts too mate ...well done ..
see I told you it was easy Martin

Thanks Steve ... However let's not forget the origional work by ...
StrayCat's write up is best for post 1993. Bluebeard's write up is best for pre 1993. Here is my contribution to carb sync on CBR1000FL - 1990 (1987 to 1993 is the same).

Steve, you"computer people" say this is easy to do. Maybe for you... The post took me longer to do than the whole Carb Sync job!!!!!![:@]

Now ...... over to you Steve ..... for the "HOW TO - CAM CHAIN REPLACEMENT FOR CBR1000f" [&:][&:]

Excellent Post!!

I have found many people are afraid to synch their own carbs because it seems complicated! This post is great at showing that with the right tools and some patience; most people can do the job themselves.

Great write up , have seen these gauges on e-bay , might buy a set and have a go as my mpg seems a bit low .

Now for a thick question[&:], why did you balance all carbs to carb No 2 ?
