So I just coasted to the gas station thinking the culprit being my empty gas tank, but then as I turned the key again after I filled up, the red oil light was glaring at me. I then checked the oil and the stick was bone dry. Just bought the bike recently and didn't think it would be dead out by now. My mistake I guess. The last owner ran fully synthetic honda oil, but I don't know how much it takes. Are there cheaper/more readily available knock-offs to the honda brand oil? What kind of filter do I need? I really just need to know how much oil the 900 takes to fill?

You should put in 3.6 qts in believe. I usually just put the full 4 qts. I religousley change my oil every 1k miles no questions asked. I used to run synthetic but my clutch would slip a lot and I think I ruined it. now I just do regular 4 stroke oil with a regular filter. I have 25k+ on my 99 and my goal is to get it too 100k and beat the **** out of her. Not a single problem as of yet.

 

3.8 is factory specs.

Glad to help, but make sure you keep checking that oil level. If it was bone dry there might be a problem cause thats a lot of oil to burn up. Just keep a close eye on it for a while. Ride Safe!!!
