Default 99 f4 won't turn over

First off, i know next to nothing about motorcycles and their systems so bear with me please. Last year i bought a really rough 99 f4, but it rode fine for about 2 months until one day i went out to start it and the battery was dead, making the clicking noise. Charged it and started and warmed up just fine and idled as well. Went to move it and give it throttle and it would only get up to about 2000rpm and sounded awful and misfiring but let off and it would idle. It eventually died and wouldn't even crank over so i just left it sit until now. Bought a new battery, the lights will turn on horn works, but nothing would happen when i hit the starter switch, no dimming or clicking or anything. i pulled the kill switch apart and there is no power going to either post inside. Then i messed with the fuses and checked them and moved them around to make sure all was good, (with the key on.. )then the the big black box which i assume is the ECU? cracked and started smoking. That's how it sits now, would really like to get it running again thanks.

Hi bud I'd start right from square one with this bike now. So download the manual and go through the ignition circuit starting from the battery. Chase the voltage and find out where it should be and at which point it stops. Hopefully you should begin to identify which components are good and bad. Go through it with patience and care. Try not to assume components are working or not. It'll take time but you'll be confident of what is working correctly and what isn't.

All sorts of components can stop these bikes from working. I once had a bike refuse to start because of a stuck clutch switch. It took me a while to identify it but I learned a bit about how the bike worked.

If you can't get one off here I got a manual off cbrextreme. you don't even have to be a member. Best of luck bud.

also, what could cause the ECU to blow up anyway? it cracked and expanded and was bright orange inside. Think that could be the root of the problem?

Hi, yes looks like the manual's not on there now sorry - was on there two weeks ago! If you PM me your email I'll send it to you. You're right, you do need a new ecu but check everything else too.

Or try this:
