hey guys, i have a 520 conversion kit on my bike, i kno for sure it is 1 down in the front, but unknowingly i replaced the rear sprocket with a stock sprocket, what is the stock number of teeth for the rear sprocket, because i GOTTTA get a couple more teeth up so i can pull it up a lil easier. Also, Would i have to get a new chain if i were to replace my rear sprocket with 2 or 3 teeth increase in the back?? because my chain is new already and that would suck to have to buy another one

This is crazy, i had ALMOST THE EXACT same question! Only, I have a 1990 F1 (but no one posts on the f1 forum), and my chain just broke on the highway (scary!) and I had 2 quesitons. 1. the front sprocket reads 520 while the chain is a 530. The front sprocket is also a 14 tooth, while I thought the stock sprocket is 15. I'm assuming someone switched it out, and didn't replace the chain... ? Safe assumption right? Could this attribute the chain breaking? When I buy a chain now, should I buy a 520 and buy a 520 rear sprocket too? Also, Should the front sprocket have some play, and be able to wiggle back and forth a lil' bit. I'm talking side to side, not front to back play. It's maybe a millimeter in play. It's enough play to make me think there could be something wrong? What should I do? THanks!

A mm of play wouldn't cause me to worry too much -- if it's more than that I'd start tearing it apart and replacing bearings. The 530 chain on a 520 sprocket would REALLY cause me to worry. As you prolly have heard, sprockets and chains should be replaced as a set. So decide what ya like best, 520 or 530, and change the whole thing.

I'm probably not going to replace the front sprocket since it's a sunstar aftermarket. But If I need to, I'll think about changing the rear to match the 520 set then. So, should I order a rear sprocket or something? What woudl you do in my situation? I'd prob. keep the same ratio though, cause I kinda of like the ratio, I wanna be able to wheelie more, (or at all) but I'm already at like.. 7k on the highway, so I don't wanna drop my ratio anymore cause it'd effect my MPG too much. What would you guys do?! ANd where can I get nice sprockets? thanx!

525 / 520 is the "pitch or size of the chain ( distance between rollers) the bigger the number the heavier the chain ( like a 12 oz coke versus a 16oz coke, the 16oz will weigh more since there is more of it!! Get it??) The manufacturer is after as much strength and as little weight as possible, so the 530; which was the standard for a long time, was being replaced by the 525 ( following the theme here??) SO....A 520 is a lighter chain than a 525, which is why race bikes have 520 chain conversions!! The 520 is more common than a 525 since people tend to go for the lighter is better syndrome, but lighter will usually wear out quicker unless you spend super dooper bucks for a HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH chain ( some of these chains are $200!!)
