firing order and ignition
Hi all,
Great forum, I have been using it for my bike the past few weeks now. I recently bought a '87 hurricane with 13,000 miles and I have a question on the plug wires. The guy before me changed the plugs and put the wires on it any way he felt and let it sit. I know the firing order is 1,2,4,3. But when I sit on the bike which cylinder is number 1? Also which coil feeds spark to which cylinder. Right now my coils are wired up 2,4,3,1 if you were sitting on the bike and started left top to the bottom then went to the right side.
I ask because the bike backfires loud enough to shake dust from my lights in the shop. I changed the wires around and it does the same thing. But if you choke it and keep on the throttle it will fire either way.
It revs to 6000rpm quick and then it slowly rises to 8000 then will hit 12000 rapidly. I rebuilt the carbs myself, after this happened, I took them to a garage and had them checked and everything is good.
I order FP jets as I think they may be an issue. I also have a manual on the way, but I would like to get this running right asap as it is bothering me. Good compression too, about 180 avg. on all cylinders.
Any help would be appreciated, especially with the plug wires and coils.

The coil on the left side of the bike goes to cylinders 1 & 4 and the one on the right goes to 2 & 3. I assume 1-4 = L-R but couldn't find it in writing. I just changed plugs 2 days ago and it was just as the manual showed. Doing 1&4 will be obvious as the wires are only so long, unless the P.O. mixed those up as well. Does that answer your question?
