American Honda has determined that the
ACG/charging system (stator and flywheel) on
affected 2004-2005 CBR1000RR models may
overheat and cause a short circuit, resulting in
insufficient battery charging.
To ensure customer satisfaction, American
Honda is extending the warranty an additional
six years for the ACG only.
If a customer complains that the battery of
their 2004-2005 CBR1000RR is not recharging
properly, proceed to the INSPECTION section
of this Service Bulletin.


All 2004-2005 CBR1000RR customers within
the affected VIN range will receive a letter
notifying them of the extended warranty. If
the ACG is malfunctioning, they should take
their motorcycle to a Honda motorcycle
dealer to have the ACG inspected and, if necessary,
replaced.
A copy of the customer letter is reproduced
on page four of this Service Bulletin.

Before you begin the repair procedure, check
to see if the unit has already been repaired.
• If there is a punch mark below the first letter
of the VIN, the unit has been repaired. If
the customer complains of a charging
problem, proceed with normal troubleshooting.
• If there is no punch mark below the first
letter of the VIN, the unit has not been
repaired. Proceed to the INSPECTION section
of this Service Bulletin.
NOTE: This is a warranty extension, NOT a
product update. It is your responsibility to
make sure the VIN is within the seven year
period of the unit’s purchase and delivery
date to the customer.


INSPECTION

1. Remove the left middle cowl (refer to section
3-8 of the 2004-2007 CBR1000RR Service
Manual).
2. Remove the wire band, and disconnect the
alternator 3P (natural color) connector.
3. Check each yellow terminal (of the
alternator side connector) to ground.
There should be no continuity.
Also, check the resistance between the three
yellow terminals using a circuit tester.
Standard: 0.1 – 1.0 ohm (at 20° / 68° F)


• If there is no continuity to ground on any
of the three yellow terminals and the resistance
is within specification, there may be
another problem. Proceed with normal
troubleshooting.


• If there is continuity to ground on any of
the three yellow terminals, or the resistance
is not within specification, replace
the ACG with the countermeasure parts
kit. Go to the REPAIR PROCEDURE and
PARTS INFORMATION sections of this
Service Bulletin.


REPAIR PROCEDURE

To replace the ACG, refer to section 11 of the
2004-2007 CBR1000RR Service Manual.

IDENTIFICATION

After you have completed the repair, place a
punch mark below the first letter of the
VIN, which is located on the right side of the
steering head pipe.

Dear CBR1000RR Owner:
American Honda has determined that riding a 2004-2005 CBR1000RR motorcycle in the low rpm range for an
extended period of time may cause the ACG to overheat, which causes a short circuit of the stator windings,
resulting in insufficient battery charging.
Warranty Extension
To ensure long-term satisfaction with your Honda, American Honda is providing a six-year warranty extension
for the ACG (charging system) on 2004-2005 Honda CBR1000RR motorcycles. This is in addition to the standard
one-year warranty that comes with your CBR1000RR. Please note that this Warranty Extension does not
apply to any CBR1000RR that has had its electrical system modified, aftermarket electrical accessories installed,
or accident damage.
What should you do?
If your CBR1000RR is starting normally, you do not need to do anything at this time.
If, however, your 2004-2005 CBR1000RR is becoming increasingly difficult to start (such as after refueling during
a ride), because the engine cranks slowly or will not crank at all, the battery may have discharged while riding
due to a faulty ACG. (Note: This warranty extension does not apply to starting problems that result from
improper battery storage or any other electrical system malfunction.)
If you believe your 2004-2005 CBR1000RR is showing signs of a faulty ACG, please call any authorized Honda
motorcycle dealer and make an appointment to have your motorcycle inspected and, if necessary, repaired.
Although the repair will take less than three hours, please plan to leave your CBR1000RR for a day to allow the
dealer flexibility in scheduling.
If you previously paid for a repair for this problem, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Please complete and
mail the enclosed Request for Reimbursement Form.

If you meet the following qualifications, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will reimburse you for the
cost of ACG replacement. No reimbursement will be made for other costs or repairs.
1. The vehicle must be a 2004-2005 CBR1000RR.
2. The previous ACG replacement must have occurred before May 18, 2007.
3. You must have a repair bill showing itemized parts and labor costs, CBR1000RR model, year,
VIN, name, address and phone number of the repair shop, and the date of the repair. The ACG
must have been replaced due to a low output condition. There must be verification of
payment, such as a copy of a cancelled check, cash receipt, or paid invoice.
4. To qualify for reimbursement, it is not necessary that you still own the affected 2004-2005
CBR1000RR, but you must have been the owner when the ACG was replaced. Only the owner
at the time of repair may request reimbursement. Do not request reimbursement for the
expenses of any other owner.
