tank range

Fuel consumption varies widely with the style of riding/speed. At a steady 70mph I'd expect to get about 45-50mpg on the motorway but if you're doing 85-90 and higher you'll get a lot less. I ride mainly twisty roads in a high spirited fashion and get about 30-35mpg.
Non of this is helped by the fuel gauge being laughably inaccurate, but at least it's on the pessimistic side, when mine reads empty I've got at least another gallon in there.
Just make sure you don't leave it on reserve, that way if you do run out at least you'll have that to get you to the nearest petrol station.

maxtherotti, the thing is the gauge may be misleading. When it says 1/4 full, what is it really. Mine is dead on.
The best method is trusting the odometer and knowing how much right wrist you give it. Then transfer that to your gauge.
You need to get a feel for the gauge and what it is really reading.
I don't know about the '87 but my '94 has a 5.5 gal tank. If yours is reading 1/4 full and I can only pump in 1-gal, the gauge reads low.
If I am 90% of the time switching to RES at 187 mi, I trust that more and then add 45 mile to empty.
There is a wide range of fuel economy here. I can get 48 mpg on a trip but on the other hand I got 28 mpg on a 320 mile trip that ate my rear tire down to the cord.
The answer is a mixture of what everyone has posted.

180(ish)
Rob,
All of the previous posts are right - watch your odometer and use the guage as a guide.
Riding round our area (Dorset/Hants) I usually return 180 from full to reserve but spirited/hard riding will knock this down as low as 120.
As a norm with 2 up and luggage 170 is easily acheived when plodding on A road/ motorways.
Just remember to start fuel tap at 'ON' so you can switch to reserve later.
Cheers
Rick
