A good friend of mine recently purchased a KTM super duke 990. On paper I love the duke and was jealous. After a ride I would not trade my 1987 cbr for his 2011 KTM. The cbr beat it everywhere. I'm sure the guys on a KTM enthusiast site would disagree and the bikes were admittedly build with different goals but it sounds similar to your trade. Bottom line is the cbr1000f is on of those rare bikes that does everything very well despite its age.

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. I have a 1994 but also have a DR-Z400. The DR is fun off road and great on poorly paved roads. I would not consider them to be close for a trade. The CBR has much more re-sale value and as you already stated, they are a great bike. On/off road bikes can only be ridden for short rides. If you have friends that ride you will be the weak link in the chain with a off road bike if they want to travel any distance.

On/offroad bikes can actually be ridden great distances. It really boils down to what the OP wants to do. If he wants to ride offroad, a dual sport would be the answer. But, not necessarily the one his buddy wants to trade him.
If it was me, I'd have a dual sport sitting alongside my 1000F

is that just the fact that u don't like the bike's looks or have u driven it or know of some technical issues of the Dr 800. personally i like the fact that the suzuki is 4 years younger and also has some offroad capability. i'm from romania and our roads are not pretty much.
I've ridden many on/offroad bikes including the Suzuki, I did 2000K's on a GS1200 3 years back, and I think dual purpose bikes are a poor compromise - they do most things OK but nothing really well. I'd rather have a road bike and the 1000F would be my choice over just about anything else.
Do you know Blackbears MC ?
