Default smoking starter relay

i have my dads bike warming up just before I do an oil change and I notice the starter solenoid/relay is smoking. Last year I had to re-terminate the wires at the solenoid since they were fried but I thought it would be ok. now I see that its not. the bikes starts up fine and stays running but after about two minutes the solenoid starts smoking. I have an aftermarket solenoid in my room so im gonna try hooking that one up but my questions is what would make the solenoid get so hot its smokes?
