Default new chain and sprockets

i noticed a little slack in my chain (enough that it would rub in my exhuast pipe) so i tightened it up, but i noticed that im at the "replace chain" marker. so im lookin at a new chain. but i thought that since the bike has 13k miles the sprockets are probably due as well.

what im wondering is, what would you guys recommend for a cheap, but not too cheap, chain and sprocket set. i wouldnt mind loosin a tooth or 2 up front and maybe gaining on in the rear for a little more low end power.

thanks

also, is the speedo run from the front tire? or will different size sprockets throw off the speedo?

Speedo from front wheel. As far as the "replace" indicator, IMO it is conservative and you can go longer.

Gen 1 87-88 .............speedo is from the front wheel there after from the front sprocket (Gen2 , Gen 3)

new chain and sprockets if you think you need them , a good o/x-ring style DID , EK, RK
Tsubaki or such and a good set of steel sprockets

personally I have had good experience with sprocketcenter dot com for "kits" and individual sprockets ..... but have also found good name brand deals on Ebay too.

Not a fan of generic chains, clip style master links, or alum' rear sprockets & this is
just my personal opinion on the matter !

For a Gen 1 different size sprockets will NOT throw off the speedo
Gen2 & 3 ..........yah it will throw out the speedo

Your bike being a 96 (Gen 3) has the speedo driven from the front sprocket (integrated into the sprocket cover)
and therefore will have the speedo thrown off by changing the front and indeed in combination the rear sprocket too.

For example I have an 18tooth front with 44 rear on my 1990 and this combo infact (verfied by GPS) makes the
speedo run "true" to actual speed on the clock. So you can basically try different combo's and have fun.
Sometimes I run a 16/44 setup (which is great fun) but it pushes the rear wheel all the way back
past the "replace chain tag" . That tag becomes a moot point once you go changing sprockets anyhow.
Mine is long gone .........it's of now use except on a stock setup.

If you go more teeth than stock remember to order at least a 120 link chain and reduce to where you need it
to work. A 114 link with larger sprockets .........will obviously leave you short !
