Hi there fellow 1000F tinkerers

I recently had an overheating problem due to a radiator cap failure. Got the cap sorted although the bike was running in the red on the way home. Now the temp is fine but the cam chain is rattling like its getting paid to. My theory is the oil may have thinned due to the heat. Sad since its only a month old. Would fresh oil do the trick or is it likely something else got hurt?

Thanks

Change the oil and see if it gets better. Oil is cheap enough and if it got hot enough to breakdown the oil, you probably don't want it in there anyway.

For sure, I just wanted to know if there was anything else it might be. I'd hate to throw in fresh oil just to have to drain it out again if I have to tear the motor down in search of something else

You would hate even more to take out the motor and take it all apart then realize that all you needed was fresh oil. If the oil doesn't solve the issue, then do the motor and save the oil.

Thanks, I'll swop out the oil tomorrow night and see if the chain shuts up.

Heavier oil will probably help as well.

I just put in a fresh can of Shell HX7...made no difference whatsoever Wish I'd seen the above suggestions earlier, the HX7 is a 10W40, is that too light? Although it had that in from the engine rebuild and it was quiet, why now? It must somehow be related to running hot. One suggestion is that the relief valve might have gotten gummed up with sludge when she got hot, does that sound possible?

David - I'm not a professional in automotive engineering .... and .... I don't have an answer to your question BUT .....

I note you say you used
"Shell HX7". I hope you meant "Shell Helix Diesel HX7".

Forgive me, but are you aware that you should use Motorcycle Oil or Diesel Oil...... not car oil?

This will not be the answer to your current problem but may well lead to issues later if you use car oil.

You will find detailed discussions on oils to use on other threads.

RE: 'One suggestion is that the relief valve might have gotten gummed up with sludge when she got hot, does that sound possible?"

Possible - but not likely or relevant. <<FYI - The oil filter BPV (relief valve) releases at between 17 - 25 PSI depending on brand of filter. This has never got stuck open to my knowledge. In any event - if it did get stuck open (the oil then just bypasses the filter area) you would still have standard oil pressure to the motor or you would see the oil pressure light on the dash illuminate if you had low oil pressure from another cause.>>>
