After 3 batteries in two years and a new rick's r/r that runs extremely hot to the touch on a 29 year old bike that lives most of it's life outdoors in a damp, rainy climate.

Sorry! It would seam to me that the stator is putting out plenty of juice. Its the R/R's job to handle it. If your getting more than say 14v at the the battery, my guess is the R/R is not doing its job.
If your getting low voltage or amps, I would figure the stator or the R/R to be the problem.
What I know about electronics is that the number of turns in the coil, how fast it turns and the energizing force, determines output. The R/R does what its name implys.
If for some reason the wires in the stator shorted to each other, or to ground, you would get less turns and in return lose output.
I could be wrong but I personally would be pointing my finger at the R/R.
To much power is not a bad thing as long as it can be controlled.
It sucks that I can't send you my old R/R due to it coming off a '94.
