Inspection exemption
Seems my 25 year old 1987 Hurricane - now qualifies for
a well earned exemption although you are not supposed
to use as a regular mode of transportation - and that may
also qualify it for a reduced insurance rate too
Any other States or Countries have this ?

We have stringent yearly roadworthy checks here every year. For the first four years of a vehicles life though it doesn't need one. No exemptions here though for registration unless your in a vintage bike/car club. But that's once the bike/car is 30 years old or more. We get smashed here with registration fees. It's a total rip off and they are going up each year.

Here in the land of taxes, it would cost $28.75 to register as Historic or $60 to have them personalized. $53.75 for first time His Reg and if I want personalized Historic plates its only $85. Downstate residents pay $78.75 and $110 for personalized tag.
It cost me $14.50 for normal registration.

On another note, motorcycles, trikes, ATV's etc all get permanent registration. You pay one fee based on the year of your ride and that's it. You never pay again unless you move to a different county, since our county treasurer handles vehicle registrations. Same deal with a car, but only for vehicles over 11 years old and older...

If I bought a new, blue, Corvette at $44,000 I'd pay DMV $3,520 in registration taxes on top of registration fees. If I traded it in for a red Corvette, I'd pay another $3,520 in taxes and loose some if not all my registration fees on the plate.
The blue Corvette sitting at the dealer would be sold to its second owner for say $40,000 with very low usage. When the second owner registered it, he would pay $3,200 in taxes plus registration fees.
They don't make good winter vehicles and after a year of little use the owner of the blue one decides to sell it for $35,000. The third owner would pay $2,800 in tax plus registration fees.
If you're thinking that in one year they collected $9520 in taxes on a $44,000 car is crazy, you're not alone.
When my renewal came in the mail for my bikes, there was a box to check if I wanted the newer yellow tags verses the white ones I already have. It would have cost $28 for each bike or $56 for each bike to keep my same numbers (not personalized, just the same number they gave me), personalized would be more like $80.
To sum it up, there are not many historical tags on bikes here. How much more blood do they need to take?

I could never live somewhere where things like that were so out of control.
We have 7 vehicles total (Dodge Charger, Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram, 2 Polaris ATV's, CBR 1000F and a motorhome). I'm only paying registration on the Charger (2005) and Ram (2004). Everything else is either old enough (motorhome and Durango) or it's a ATV or motorcycle and exempt from paying yearly registration....

My bikes cost around the $550 EACH per year. Thats made up of third party insurance ( in case you injure someone else ), registration fees and the cost of the mechanical inspection each year. On top of that is comprehensive insurance which can vary a lot due to age, experience, bike type etc. To keep a bike on the road here your looking at around $1000 per year all up with rego and insurance. Our personalised plate scheme is a total rip off with them costing $100 per year mimimum. I have my initials and my birth year ( GB-72 ) on my bird and (GB-721 ) on my 1000F. If you think Texas is the land of taxes Tim come and live here....lol. Its an absolute rip off that we can't do a thing about.
